  • American School for the deaf opens

    American School for the deaf opens

    In April of 1817, the first school for the deaf was opened in Hartford Connecticut. They had around 80 students who attended this school. It was the first perinate deaf school in the United States.

  • Perkins institution for the blind

    Perkins institution for the blind

    In 1829 in Boston Ma, the school for the blind opened. Not only did the Perkins institution help the blind but they advocated for other spots around the country to create schools like they had done. Samuel Gridley Howe was the first director of the school who pushed his students to learn just like anyone else.

    In 1840 the state of Rhode Island passed a law mandating compulsory education. It was the first state in the country to do so. This opened the doors for all children to go to school together.

    In 1943 the classification of autism was created. It was created by a child psychiatrist Leo Kanner at Johns Hopkins and the University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD. This would be vital for years to come.

    The elementary and secondary education act took place in 1965 that changed education forever. This gave all students equal opportunity to succeed within schools. Which created the ESE factor within schools.

    Education for all handicapped students act of 1975

    In 1975 the education for all handicapped students act of 1975 was passed by congress. This act allowed kids with disabilities from as young as 3 and up to 21 years old be in schools. Grants soon followed to provide the proper funding for these unique situations.

    In 1975 the Individuals with disabilities education act aka (IDEA) was passed. With the least restrictive environment, and to take a look at the curriculum and make the appropriate adjustments to have these children succeed.

    No child left behind act
