    Connecticut Asylum for the Education and Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons

    The first permanent school for students with a disability opened in Hartford, Connecticut and served those that were deaf. In the name
    "Deaf and Dumb" dumb meant they were unable to speak. This came from parents who wanted their deaf child to receive education.
  • The Arc

    The Arc

    The Arc works with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities as well as their families. This organization was started by parents who had a child with I/DD who wanted to provide happiness and purpose fulfillment to everyone. It is the biggest national community-based organization with both state and local chapters across the country.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education

    These five cases became a group and were help together when Supreme court overruled the "separated but equal" and stated it was unconstitutional. This allowed all students to receive the same education regardless of race. These lawsuits was later used to also help students with disabilities in their cases.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    This Act was a landmark as it brought awareness providing equal quality education to all. ESEA provided funding to low income schools as well as preschools. It also mandated education programs even when schools were closed.

    Pennsylvania Association for Retarded Citizens

    PARC was a lawsuit for 14 students against the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Fighting a state law excluding students who had now reached a "mental age of 5" by first grade.   • Mills v. Board of Education

    Mills v. Board of Education

    Mills was a lawsuit against the District of Columbia on behalf of seven students. This lawsuit declared that no child with a deficiency can be excluded from a free public education due to behavior, mental, physical or emotional handicap. This decision later helped pressure the federal law which led to IDEA.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    The Public Law 94-142 required schools to provide all students regards of disability with a free public education. Schools needed to elevate the student with a parents input to discuss and education plan. This allowed all students with disabilities to be given a special education with parent approval.

    The National Center for Learning Disabilities

    This helped make public awareness and fonds such as grants to support the research and practices in learning disabilities. NCLD ensured people with special need were successful in life. They promote equal rights and opportunity for all as they innovate, do research, and advocacy on a national level.

    Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

    This act changed the saw EHA to IDEA this made individual transition plan (itp) mandatory as part of a students iep. It also added autism and traumatic brain injury as new disabilities. This helped students make the change to their post-secondary life.
  • Every Student Succeeds Act

    Every Student Succeeds Act
