  • American School for the Deaf

    American School for the Deaf
    This school was originally known as the American Asylum for the Education and Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb. It is the first permanent school dedicated to students with disabilities. It was also responsible for creating the American sign language.
  • Council for Exceptional Children

    Council for Exceptional Children
    This professional organization is meant for SPED educators. Its purpose is to help students with disabilities by advancing its standards, professional development, and advocating governmental policies. It is to ensure that students with disabilities will have an excellent school experience.
  • Elementary and Secondary Edu. Act

    Elementary and Secondary Edu. Act
    Public Law 89-10, it helps low-income families have access to education programs that are high-quality. Provides free and reduced lunches and more teachers in disadvantaged communities. Children who need additional support can benefit from public school education programs.
  • Vocational Rehabilitation Act

    Vocational Rehabilitation Act
    It is a federal law that helps people with disabilities. It grants supported employment, independent living, federally-funded programs and activities, ETC. This benefits students with disabilities greatly because it covers every aspect of their life.
  • Edu. Amendments Act

    Edu. Amendments Act
    Public Law 93-380, it grants federal funds to states that have programming for students with disabilities. Also, students and families have the right of due process in special education placement. Students who are gifted and talented also receive state programs that are federally-funded.
  • INDIV w/ Disabilities Education Act

    INDIV w/ Disabilities Education Act
    This law was signed by Gerald Ford. It was originally known as Education for All Handicapped Children Act. The purpose of this law is to provide students with disabilities a free appropriate public education (FAPE). Also, it gives funds to schools to have special education services available for them.
  • Cedar Rapids v. Garret F.

    Cedar Rapids v. Garret F.
    This case is about Garret that is paralyzed from the neck down at the age of 4 due to a motorcycle accident. It did not affect his mental capacities. However, he required nursing services in order to attend his regular class. It kept being denied until the case reached the U.S. Supreme Court. The verdict was ruled (7-2). The IDEA has helped Garret have a less restrictive learning environment.

  • No Child Left Behind Act

    No Child Left Behind Act
    The NCLB Act was signed by George W. Bush. This law is meant to help students with disabilities to give them a fair and equal opportunity. It will also enforce schools to provide a better education for them. The video provided below explains the act and gives insight on how it is being enforced. There are pros and cons of the act and assessing students is required in order for schools to show their annual yearly progress.
