  • Sputnik takes off

On October 4, 1957 sputnik was launched by the Soviets. Sputnik taking off is very important because this marks the very beginning of The Space Race.
  • The U.S. launches Explorer 1 into orbit

Feburary 1, 1958 the U.S. launched Explorer 1 into orbit in response to the Soviets launcing Spunik in 1957. In a chase to catch up to the Soviets many more satellites were launched over the years. This is important because this is the first thing the U.S. sent into space at that time.
  • NASA

In the later 1958's the U.S. decided to create a new program. This government agency would be called NASA. NASA stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration. This is important because many different scientists and engerneers were united and they completed many tasks.
  • First human in space

On April 12, 1961 the Soviets sent the first human into space on Vostok 1. This is very impoortant because this puts the U.S. behind and this sparked a fire for the U.S.to want to send a human into soace and land on the moon.
  • The U.S. sends someonne to space

On May 5, 1961 the U.S. sends our first person to space named Alan Shepard on Freedom 7,but unfortunately he does not orbit Earth because he is apart of Mercury Space Program. This is one of the most important parts of the Space Race because this is was first person in space.
  • John Kennedy gives an incredible speech

On May 25, 1961 John Kenndy gave an incredible speech about sending a man to space. The famous qoute " I beleive that this nation should commit itself to achieing the goal, before the decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to earth" completely shocked many people but NASA decided to take on this challenge. This is important because without John Kennedy giving this speech I do not beleive that we would have sent a man to the moon.
  • John Gleen orbits the earth

On Feburary 20, 1962 John Gleen orbited the Earth. This is great because the Soveits had not orbited the Earth. So therefore we were ahead in the Space Race.
  • Between 1964 to 1972 great accoplishments were made

Between the years 1964 and 1972 some great accomplishments were made. In this time spand the U.S. and the Soviets sent many unpiloted space crafts to explore the moon. This is a great accoplishment not only for the U.S. but the Soviets too because during this time spand many things were found. Not only that but this gets the U.S. one step closer to sending a man to the moon.
  • A man walks on the moon

On July 20, 1969 Apollo 11 eneters orbit. Once in orbit two men including Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin aboard the Eagle. Soon after the two men aboarded the Eagle they landed on the moon's surface.A few hours late both men walk on the moon being the first people to walk on the moon. This is GREAT! This not only helps us learn alot more about space but also ends the Space Race.
  • A colony of people

On Janurary 15, 2004 president Bush announces that there will be a permanent colony of people on the moon. This is important because we will learn many new things about space when wee do this.
