In the year 1997, 6 Degrees was launched as the first recognizable social media website where people could create a profile and upload more than just e-mail messages to share. For a time, it was one of the hottest things on the Internet, but like many things having to do with electronic technology, it became outdated and was replaced in a short amount of time.

With the end of an era comes a new beginning. Social media based on modern electronic technology began in the 1990's before exploding into what it is today, just two decades later.

By the time the 21st Century rolled in, new sites came to challenge the stand that 6 Degrees had enjoyed for only a few years. Two of these were LinkedIn and MySpace, which are still well known and commonly used today. By 2005, however, an unprecedented advancement in the realm of Internet-based content sharing would finally render the hot 6 Degrees site cold and obsolete.

With the evolution of Internet 2.0 came a significant increase in the amount and types of content people could share online. First Photobucket and Flickr allow people to share photos, then YouTube allows people to upload a virtually unending library of homemade videos. The future is now, and will continue to be for a while.
