History of Programming languages

  • Creation of Plankalkul

    Plankalkul was created in 1948 by Konrad Zuse. The purpose was to be used in engineering.
  • Creation of MATH_MATIC

    MATH-MATIC was created in 1957 by a group lead by Charles Katz. The purpose was to be an improvement over Fortron.
  • Creation of Lisp

    Lisp was created in 1958 by Steve Russell, Timothy P. Hart, and Mike Levin. The purpose was to be used for mathematical notation for computer programs but then became used for AI work.
  • Creation of COBOL

    COBOL was created in 1959 by Grace Hopper,William Selden,Gertrude Tierney,Howard Bromberg,Howard Discount,Vernon Reeves,Jean E. Sammet. The purpose was to be useful in business use.
  • Creation of Fortran

    Fortran was created in 1959 by John Backus & IBM. The purpose was to be a general language especially suited to numeric computation and scientific computing.
  • Creation of RPG

    RPG was created in 1959 by IBM. The purpose was to replicate punch card processing. Stands for Report program generator.
  • Creation of B

    B was created in 1960 by Ken Thompson, and Dennis Ritchie. The purpose of this language was to do recursive, non-numeric, machine independent applications, such as system and language software.
  • Creation of Basic

    Basic was created in 1964 by John George Kemeny and Thomas Eugene Kurtz. The purpose of this language was to allow people not in math and science fields to use computers because they all needed custom software at the time.

    LOGO was created in 1967 by Daniel G. Bobrow, Wally Feurzeig, Seymour Papert, and Cynthia Solomon. The purpose was to be used for AI work, mathematical logic and developmental psychology.

    PASCAL was created in 1970 by Niklaus Wirth. The purpose was to encourage good programing practices using structural programing and data structuring.

    C was created in 1972 by Dennis Ritchie & Bell Labs. The purpose was to be easy to use and use a simple compiler so that it would not take much time.

    ML was created in 1973 by Robin Milner & others at the University of Edinburgh. The purpose was to develop proof tactics in the LCF theorem prover.

    SQL was created in 1974 by ISO/IEC. The purpose was to manage data in database management systems. Stands for Structured Query language

    ADA was made in 1980 by Jean Ichbiah. The purpose of this language was to replace to multitude of languages that the Dod used at the time of this language.

    Delphi was created in 1995 by Borland. The purpose was to be used as a rapid application development tool for windows.
