  • Foundation of a nation

    The first colonist arrived in North America and settled the colony of Jamestown in 1607. Not many people were concerned with physical education because they were worried about survival and that is all the were focused on.
  • German Gymnastics is Introduced in America

    Charles Beck introduced Jahn's gymnastic program of exercise in Massachusetts. This started the first school gymnastics program in America, this was important because German Gymnastics has a large impact on American Physical Education.
  • Hartford adds PE

    Catherine Beecher was director of Hartford Female Seminary an institution for higher education. She developed and introduced her own program to incorporate physical education into the curriculum. This is important because she was the first to advocate for the inclusion go daily physical activities into the public schools.
  • First Colligate Athletic Event

    The first inter-colligate athletic competition occurred between Harvard and Yale. After this competition inter-colligate competitions would increase and have a large impact on college campuses.

    College Athletics Growth

    Throughout this time period college athletics saw a huge change in the way they operated, many new sports were introduced into the colligate level. Also committees of faculty members began to pop up across the nation to regulate the athletics, which led to the organization of the first conference which would later be know at the Big Ten. Also during this time the committees established eligibility standards to ensure students also received a quality education.
  • Normal Institute

    Diocletian Lewis established the normal institute for Physical Education teachers. This event is important because this is the first institution founded to train teachers for physical education.
  • College PE gets improvements

    Edward Hitchcock and Sargent Dudley were major influences in the development of college PE programs. In 1861, Hitchcock was named the director of health and hygiene at Amherst college, this meant he was able to import his practices into action.
  • Physical Education gains recognition

    California becomes the first state to require physical education to be offered, followed by many other states after. Also important physical education was recognized as a curricular area by the national association of education in 1881.
  • Foundation of AAPE

    The foundation of the Association for the Advancement of Physical Education occurred in 1885. This organization was concerned with professionals trading their programs, and ideas on how they structured their teaching. This was one of the first professional organizations for people in the field of Physical Education, this organization developed into todays American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD).
  • "New Physical Education"

    At an international conference for education Thomas Wood delivered a speech about brooding the aim for physical education. This would become known as the "new physical education," and attempted to use physical education to help improve overall value of life.
  • Delphine Hanna breaks barrier

    Hanna attended Sargent's school and received training. Hanna was the first women in the United States to be a full professor of physical education.
  • Playground Association of America

    The Playground Association of America was founded in the year 1906. This association was valuable to Americans because it helped promote physical fitness across the nation and showed that they cared about the youth getting fit.
  • Physical Failure

    After the selective service act called all men to service ages 18-25 drafted many soldiers into war. An exam of physical fitness of our soldiers later showed that nearly one third of the soldiers drafted were physically unfit, and many more were physically inept.

    "Education through the Physical"

    "Education through the physical," became a new trending idea among advocates of physical education. This meant that advocates believed in the interconnectedness of the mind, and body and believe that physical education was important for a healthy, mind, body, and soul.

    The Great Depression hits PE

    Between the years of 1932-1934 nearly 40% of Physical Education programs were cut from schools. This has a large effect on the physical health of America because many children were excluded from program cuts.
  • Title IX of the Education Amendments

    This amendment allowed for women to achieve more opportunities to participate in sport. This amendment stated that on no basis of sex shall they be left out of the benefits from engaging in sports from federally financed programs. This allowed and opened the door for man new sports programs and team for women across the US.
