  • Father of Gymnastics

    Father of Gymnastics
    Friedrich Ludwig Jahn moved to Berlin where he began to teach gymnasium at the Plamann School. He created early models of the balance beam, horizontal bars, and parallel bars. He also opened the first open-air gymnasium in 1811 which helped to spread the gymnastics craze very fast.
  • First American Physical Education Teacher

    First American Physical Education Teacher
    Charles Beck came to New York in December 1824. Soon after arriving he became a teacher with the Round Hill School at Northampton, Massachusetts. While he was there he established the first outdoor gymnasium and the first school gymnastics program in the United States. He taught physical education classes with a curriculum modeled after Fredrick Jahn's system.
  • Physical Education Legislation

    Physical Education Legislation
    In 1866 California became the first state to pass the Physical Education Legislation. This law required public schools to have excerise periods twice a day. This helped to put physical education a priority within schools by requiring excerise times.
  • Olympics

    Olympics
    In the summer of 1896 Athene, Greece held the first Olympics. They were held at Panathinaiko Stadium, which was the only olympic stadium at the time. The athletics event with the most international range of participants was the marahon because it was the first time it had been held as a compitition. Other events included cycling, fencing,shooting, swimming, weightlifting, gymnastics, tennis, and wrestling.

    NCAA
    NCAA stands for National Collegiate Athletic Association. Almost all colleges and universitys belong to this organization as a way to protect athletes. They oversee and make rules and rule changes for all college teams. They impose penalties on schools when they break the rules.
  • Playground Assiciation of America

    Playground Assiciation of America
    The playground assiciation was formed to expand the playground movement across America. It was formed by both Henry S. Curtis and Luther H. Gulick at the YMCA in Washington DC. The movement was a way to distract people from problems of urbanization, immagration, and industrailization. As the cities became more crowded they felt playgrounds were a healthy safe way to provide relief to children in the inner city.
  • Brown VS Board of Education

    Brown VS Board of Education
    This law was created by the US Supreme Court to make seperate schools for blacks and whites unconstitutional. With this it allowed blacks to participate in the same activities with the white students, such as physical education classes.
  • Presidents Council on Physical Fitness

    Presidents Council on Physical Fitness
    Dwight D. Eisenhower created the Presidents Council on Youth Fitness on July 16, 1956. He created this council because studies had found children in Europe were said to be healthier than those in America. In 1963 President Kennedy changed the name of the council to Presidents Council on Physical Fitness to include all Americans, not just the youth. This council is a government organization to promote and encourage all americans to be phycially active and participate in sport.

    Title IX
    President Lyndon B Johnson started putting things in order to make title IX a law when he was in ofice. It was Richard Nixon that passed the law on June 23, 1972. Title IX states that no person in the United States shall be excluded from participation or be discriminated against based on sex. This law helped with women being able to participate in sports and physical activities.
  • Healthy People

    Healthy People
    Healthy People was created in 1979 as a nationwide program to promote healh and disease prevention. It was updated to Healthy People years later. 2000's goals were to increase life expectancy and improve quality of life, and eliminate health disparities within different part of the population. The newest updated program is Healthy People 2010 which also focuses on the gials of 2000 but breaks the goals dwn into 467 specific objectives.
  • Luther Gulick

    Luther Gulick
    Luther was an American physical education instructor, international basketball official, and co-founder of the Camp Fire Girls. He was the superintendent of the physical education department of the International YMCA Training School for three years. He helped James Naismith create a winter sport that could be played indoors, which is turn Naismith invented and popularized basketball. In 1975 founded the Camp Fire Girls to prepare women for work outside the home.
