1963 - Cuban Immigrants - The Start of bilingual and Bicultural public schools
Cuban immigrants start to move to Miami and with more Cuban children requiring an education, Coral Way Elementary School is the first to offer bicultural/ bilingual classes. I believe this changed multicultural education in the U.S. because now they were catering to Spanish speakers and as a result, I'm assuming there was more demand for Spanish speaking professors. As a result, I believe, this allowed Spanish to remain a dominant language in the world. -
1964 - Civil Rights
The Civil Rights Act becomes law prohibiting discrimination based on race, color, sex, religion or national origin. I believe that this helped move the needle in multicultural education because now a lot of history and languages could be taught by diverse professors. -
1965 - ESEA
On April 9th Education Elementary and Secondary Education Act is passed that helped initiating some educational programs and bilingual education. I believe this helped with multicultural education because now low-income families who were likely immigrants were able to get education for their children -
1965 - Immigration Act
The Immigration Act of 1965 was passed and resulted in a high number of Asian and Latin American families being able to immigrate to the U.S. This definitely helped in diversifying every classroom in the U.S. and I believe helped in children starting to adapt with different cultures. -
1968 - Bilingual Education Act
The Bilingual Education Act was passed to help bilingual students in educational settings. This helped students who were not English speakers to obtain the same kind of education and be provided the same educational tools as English speakers. -
1968 - Magnet School Begins
McCarver Elementary School in Tacoma, Washington became the first "Magnet" school meaning that instead of abiding by the standard rules of district schooling, it would encourage students from different places to attend that school, opening up the opportunity for diversity. I believe it was a brilliant idea to start blurring the lines between all white and all black schools. This, in theory, should also help in minimizing racism and should allow for better education. -
1975 - National Association of Bilingual Education
The National Association of Bilingual Education was funded. I believe this helped with multicultural education because it's a nonprofit that was made specifically for bilingual or multilingual students in mind. With this, professors and students alike had resources that they needed that would otherwise not be given to them. -
1982 - The Case of Plyler v. Doe
The court ruled that schools can't discriminate against undocumented students because it goes against the 14th amendment. I believe this helped shape the multicultural education because allowing undocumented students from around the world to get an education, and without changing tuition fees, also helped in diversifying schools. -
1994 - IASA
Bill Clinton signs into law the "Improving America's Schools Act". In this act, it helped reauthorize the ESEA and funded a lot of bilingual and immigrant education. I believe this helped because it gave multicultural students the opportunity to be educated no matter what their background and language. -
1996 - Multicultural Education: Transformative Knowledge and Action
James Banks wrote his book which helped with scholarships regarding multicultural education. I believe this moved the needle in helping people, educators and school districts understand the importance of multicultral education.
