    Coral Way Elementary School in Florida starts the first bilingual classes. This was in response to the Cuban immigration in the 50's and 60's and provided a template for future bilingual education.

    The Civil Rights Act created groups protected from discrimination. This sweeping reform created unprecedented opportunity for African Americans and other minority groups resulting in better education for children.

    Project Head start was established to aid children from low socioeconomic backgrounds. It was created to assist school children in regards to their physical and mental health, nutritional, and emotional needs. This impacts multicultural education by giving diverse students a greater chance to be successful and stay in school thereby maintaining the multicultural education of all.

    The Equality of Educational Opportunities study published.
    Also known as the Coleman report, this report studied the lack of equal opportunity education in the USA. It set the groundwork for busing leading to a more racially integrated approach to education.

    This act provided federal funds to school districts to create educational programs for students with limited English abilities. Not only did this assist bilingual children, it assisted children of low socioeconomic status in the the money was typically used in poorer school districts.

    Title IX ensured no one could be discriminated against in federally funded public education based on their sex. This is extremely important because universities are required to be non-discriminatory and to actively work towards preventing any form of sexual harassment or discrimination. We see the results today with women excelling in every part of life including Soccer's World Cup.

    This national group advocates for English language learners and multicultural educational experiences. They continue today further developing bilingual education techniques.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) established

    Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) established
    This act, based on the work of previous legislation, allowed for all disabled children to receive a free public education like everyone else. The effect can be seen in the design of school buildings, specialized staff, and buses that may accommodate all students.

    The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) established
    This law prohibits discrimination based on disability which has huge effects in education, housing, and all aspects of life. It has proven to be the standard when creating policies with disabled people's rights in mind.
  • Improving America's Schools Act

    Improving America's Schools Act
    In an effort to reform education, this renewal and reworking of the ESEA gave more federal money to poorer schools to create better programs for diverse students. Its greatest effect was making schools accountable for the success of all their students despite their ethnic or socioeconomic differences.
