    Engel v. Vitale
    A landmark case that specifies that state officials may not impose an official state prayer on to public schools, and have it be recited each start of the school day. Multiple cultures around the world includes a religion that may practice different variations of morning prayers. This ruling enables them to not be required to practice another culture's.
  • Diana v. California State Board of Education

    Diana v. California State Board of Education
    This case creates allows a slough of new legislation to be written, which requires testing for special education purposes be in the test taker's main language. This allows for children who may not speak or read a dominant culture's language, to be placed into the class that will benefit them the most.

    Title IX makes it illegal to discriminate based on gender in education. This helps to add new perspectives to our classrooms
  • The Refugee Act of 1980

    The Refugee Act of 1980
    This act signed by President Jimmy Carter, revamps immigration laws and allows for immigrants to be admitted for humanitarian reasons. This allows for many families to come into the United States, which in turn spreads diversity. This diversity sets the staging grounds for multicultural education.

    Plyer v. Doe
    This US Supreme Court case enables public education to be something that must be offered to undocumented immigrants. This in turn adds more immigrants to the classroom, and helps to create our multicultural perspective.
  • Board of Education v. Pico

    Board of Education v. Pico
    In this Supreme Court case, the ruling was made in support of school administrators being unable to remove books from the school library if they have been deemed "inappropriate". Usually books that disagree with the dominant culture's view of the world are the books targeted by removal. This case allows for more freedom in school libraries.

    The US Supreme Court found that state schools allowing for silent prayer and voluntary teacher-led prayer infringed on first amendment rights. This would allow students the ability to practice their own beliefs without the judgement from their peers.

    The US Supreme Court ruled in favor of having a student not being indefinitely suspended due to a problem arising from their disability. This allows for our school system to be more tolerable of those whose's disability might clash with our school culture.
