The first publicly supported library in the U.S. is established in Charles Town, South Carolina. Two years later, the General Assembly of South Carolina passes the first public library law.
Me: Libraries are where students read, people enjoy their favorite novel, and education stems from them. This show that education needs a place to facilitate the storage of books.
  • 1776

    1776
The Declaration of Independence is adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4th. Written by Thomas Jefferson, the document serves notice to King George III and the rest of the world that the American Colonies no longer considered themselves part of the British Empire.
Me: We no longer had to get permission from Kings/Queens of England in order to do something in the "New World." No longer following the rules of a monarch but practice democracy.

    1787
The Young Ladies Academy opens in Philadelphia and becomes the first academy for girls in the original 13 colonies/states.
Me: Historically it was men that continued higher education and never women. This was one of many events that gave women a space to learn.

    1849
In the case of Roberts v. City of Boston, the Massachusetts Supreme Court rules that the Boston Public Schools can deny enrolment of African American children to segregated, “whites-only” schools. The case is later cited as a precedent for the Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) ruling.
Me: The remnants of slavery stay long after the reforms made with the black community. This show the mentality that people still had about their fellow Americans.
  • 1875

    1875
The Civil Rights Act is passed, banning segregation in all public accommodations. The Supreme Courts rule it unconstitutional in 1883.
Me: This act made it possible for all people of color and white to be together without signage. Education should know no limit of who it teaches.
  • 1931

    1931
Alvarez vs. the Board of Trustees of the lemon grove California School District becomes the first successful school desegregation court case in the United States, as the local court forbids the school district from placing Mexican American children in a separate “Americanization” school.
Me: This shows how uneducated America was about it Mexican/Indian population that the line crossed them separating them from Mexico. This allowed the Mexican American population to receive actually education.
  • 1946

    1946
In court case of Mendez vs. Westminster and the California Board of Education, the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles rules that educating children of Mexican Descent in separate facilities is unconstitutional, thus prohibiting segregation in California schools and setting an important precedent for Brown vs. Board of Education.
Me: History repeating itself when the black community demanded the same constitutional right to be educated with limits of color. This case made it possible.
  • 2010

    2010
With the U.S. economy mired in the “great recession” and unemployment remaining high, states have massive budget deficits. Many teachers face layoffs.
Me: This impacted families way of providing for the children education. Just to buy school supplies was a big deal during the recession.
  • 2012

    2012
Adam Lanza, 20, kills his mother and then invades Sandy Hook Elementary School where he kills 20 children and six adults, including principal Dawn Hochsprung and psychologist Mary Sherlachmaking, making this the second deadliest mass shooting by a single person in U.S. history.
Me: It is a sad thing when issues of politics disrupt learning for children. After this, schools implement policies for intruders.
  • 2014

    2014
As schools open this fall, a demographic milestone is reached: minority students enrolled in k-12 public school classrooms out number non-Hispanic Caucasians.
Me: Minority students aren't a minority anymore. People of any ethnicity or race can now receive a quality education. It also shows how America is more than just one people.
