    Engel v. Vitale Supreme Court Case Ruling
    On June 25, 1962 in the case of Engel v. Vitale, the Supreme Court ruled public schools may not have an official prayer. This is an important to multicultural education, because not all students who attend public schools are of the same religion and should not be forced to participate in a practice they do not agree with.
  • Learning Disabilities Association of America is Established

    Learning Disabilities Association of America is Established
    During a conference, on April 6, 1963 a group of parents established a movement about children with learning disabilities. They determined methods and devised a plan that resulted in what is now known as, "Learning Disabilities Association of America," helping students who identify as having a learning disability. This has had an impact on multicultural learning, because now these students have a plan put into practice to ensure they also receive an effective education.
  • Civil Right Act of 1964

    Civil Right Act of 1964
    After the Civil Rights Act was passed which ended the segregation upon race, color, sex, and religion, it forbid the discrimination based on these students. This is important to multicultural education, because students are no longer restricted or limited on the type of education they received.
  • Rehabilitation Act of 1973

    Rehabilitation Act of 1973
    In 1973, the Rehabilitation Act was passed requiring schools to have accommodations for students with disabilities by having accessibility into buildings and classrooms. This act also required special accommodations to be made in order for these students to participate in activities and programs. This is an impactful event, because it provides the inclusion of all students and do not make them feel as if they are limited to do something they would like to do.

    Board of Education v. Pico
    On June 25, 1962 in the case of the Board of Education v. Pico the Court decided school personnel and administration do not have the rights to remove books that they feel and/or deem inappropriate from the school's library. This has an impact on multicultural education, because students are of many different cultures. If the administrators removed a book that they possibly identified or related to may have them feeling excluded and restrict them from learning or introduced to something new.
  • Proposition 187

    Proposition 187
    In California, on November 8, 1994 voters passed a proposition that denied the public education to undocumented students. It was challenged by different groups which turned the initial decision. This is important to multicultural education because it allows every child or different statuses to receive an education.
  • North American Council for Online Learning (NACOL)

    North American Council for Online Learning (NACOL)
    In 2003, a committee gathered and formed the North American Council for Online Learning for Pre-K - 12 education. This is important in multicultural education, because some students do not perform well in traditional classroom settings and may prefer an online classroom.
  • Common Core Standards

    The "Common Core Standards" is developed which are a set of standards for kindergarten through 12th grade. These standards are aimed to prepare students with clear instruction and teaching for college readiness. This is impactful to multicultural education, because although it provides a range in which the student would be tested upon, some students may not adapt well to these standards depending on their learning styles and development.

    Common Core Standards Dropped By Indiana
    In March 2009, Mike Pence, governor of Indiana signed legislation declaring the state of Indiana will no longer teach through the Common Core Standards. It is impactful to multicultural education, because it gives another opportunity for students to learn through another initiative that may be more suitable for their learning styles and needs for them to be more prepared for higher education.

    Transgender Student Policy
    On December 4, 2017 Minnesota becomes the 33rd state to have an official transgender student policy put into place by adopting an approach to allow transgender students join female sports teams. This is impactful in multicultural education, because it not only protects students who identify as transgender but it also being inclusive of these students, which may have had a direct effect on their educational experience if not addressed.
