Hammurabi's code was created by the new found Babylonian king Hammurabi. With this code Hammurabi made 300 laws that discuss a wide range of subject from murder to adoption. This was to govern a fast growing population. This is were we got the term "an eye for an eye" meaning everyone is treated equally based on who you are. out of this we got prescribed punishment's and codification.

The Justinian code was made to try and organize the old roman laws as they were a complete mess, trying to make them accessible to all. His wife Theodora played a huge roll in make in the Justinian code. As she wanted him to add new laws that were fairer to women by allowing parents to leave property to daughters, and improving women's rights. Jobs where also given to people based on ability and not social class. This code gave us the basis of civil law and equality under the law. -
The Common law is a body of unwritten laws based on legal precedents established by the courts. It was established In 1066 when a king established a team of judges that would roam the country settling cases. They did this by relying on pervious laws and decisions known as a precedent. This was to help make decisions, called case law. Common law is also used when deciding on an unusual case in an instance when the outcome cant be determined through statute laws or written laws. -
The purpose of the Magna Carta was to subject kings to the law as they would always abuse their own power on the common people. So stated in the Magna Carta EVERYONE had to follow the law even the king and nor could he remove peoples rights. It also introduced the idea of habeas corpus that protected people against unlawful and identified imprisonment. And in 1215 the first British parliament was established, parliament helped create laws know as statutes(statute law) ,like out criminal code. -
The Great law of Peace was created by the Haudenosaunee a combination of "The Six Nations", the Mohawks, Onondaga, Cayuga, Oneida, Seneca. This formed the Iroquois Constitution. The great law of peace was on of the earliest forms of democracy as the 6 nations all had to decide on something for it to be passed and practiced among the people. This is where we got our first recorded and written down laws passes down by wampum belts that conveyed meaning. -
The Napoleonic Code, officially the civil code of the French established in 1804. After the French revolution powerful groups such as manners and guilds had been destroyed, and the church had been suppressed. So now the state needed a new body of law known as the Napoleonic code. this code change a lot of ideologies, like how all citizens are now all seen as equal to the law with regards of social class and gender and practiced the enjoyment of civil rights, and property rights.
