History of high level programming

  • Plankalkul

Konrad Zuse developed this to advance programming. It was the beginning of high level languages.
  • Period: to

    Programming languages

  • FORTRAN

Date held as a place holder. This language was used by IBM, and stood for Formula Translator System. it was developed by John Backus. It was commercially released in 1957.
  • MATH-MATIC

The author is unknown, suspected to be Grace Hopper. It is a programming language for UNIVACS, and an improvement of Fortran.
  • Public release of FORTRAN

  • LISP

Its developers are Steve Russell, Timothy P. Hart, and Mike Levin. It is used for AI’s currently, but that was not what it was made for. List processing is what it stands for.
  • RPG

Report Program Generator was developed by IBM. It was made to replicate punch cards.
  • COBOL

COBOL is Common Business Oriented Language, developed by Conference on Data Systems Languages for business applications.
  • BASIC

The beginning programming language, it was designed by John George Kemeny and Thomas Eugene Kurtz.
  • LOGO

Logic-Oriented Graphic-Oriented(possibly, the name is not known), developed by Wally Feurzeig and Seymour Papert, made for education.
  • B

Most credit is given to Ken Thompson. However he did have help from Dennis Richie. B is for operations not involving numbers.
  • PASCAL

This was made by Niklaus Wirth, named after Blaise Pascal. It was made to help good programming practices.
  • C

Developed by Dennis Richie, C is a more powerful version of B.
  • ML

ML is the abbreviation of metalanguage and is developed by Robin Milner and some people at the University of Edinburgh. It was made to proven a certain theorem.
  • SQL

A joint effort by ISO/IEC, Structured Query Language was invented to help file data.
  • C++

Bjarne Stroustrup put more features into C, called classes. C++ is very popular still.
  • ADA

The Department of defense named this after Ada Bryon. It was made for aviation, manufacturing, and banking.
  • Python

Python is a very popular language. Python Software Foundation made it, and it can be compared to shorthand for languages.
  • Visual Basic

Made by Microsoft, VB is based off BASIC, but with an easier curve.
  • PHP

Personal Home Page is the HTML code, the PHP Group made it.
  • Java

Made by James Gosling and co-workers at Sun Microsystems, Java is very similar to past languages
  • Javascript

Made for Netscape and web applications, this language, separate from Java, was made possible by Brendan Eich.
  • Delphi

A group of Apple Computers employees and Larry Tesler made this to work with the Windows OS.
