    Galileo Galilei

    Galileo Galilei
Galileo Galilei was born on February 15 1564 and died January 8/ 1642. When Galileo was 30 he obtained a patent for a machine that pumped water from a lake for the irrigation of land. Galileo discovered that 10 meters was as high the water would rise in the suction pump thou he had no explanation. He was 78 when he died which was quite long to live at the time. He was a lecturer at the University of Pisa.
  • Otto Von Guericke

    Otto Von Guericke
Otto Von Guericke was born on November 20 1602 and died on May 11/ 1686. When he was 54 he developed new air pumps that could evacuate larger volumes of air. He developed an experiment by pumping all the air out of two hemispheres that were held together by nothing but grease, 8 horses at each hemisphere were not strong enough to separate them. He was 84 when he died.
  • Evangelista Torricelli

    Evangelista Torricelli
Evangelista Torricelli was born on October 15 1608 and died on October 25 1647. When Torricelli was 36 he built the first barometer. He filled a 1m long tube with mercury and placed the open end in a basin of mercury. The column of mercury fell around 760mm leaving an empty space; he named that empty space a vacuum. Torricelli died at age 39 of Typhus.
  • Blaise Pascal

    Blaise Pascal
Blaise Pascal was born on June 19 1623 and died on August 19 1692. Pascal was 25 when he concluded that the force that keeps the column at 760mm (Torricelli’s experiment) was the weight of the air above the column. Pascal also formulated that the force, he called it pressure, was acting in all directions. Pascal was 69 when he died.
  • Christiaan Huygens

    Christiaan Huygens
Born: 14 April 1629 in The Hague, Netherlands
Died: 8 July 1695 in The Hague, Netherlands
Using one of his own lenses, Huygens detected, in 1655, the first moon of Saturn. The following year he discovered the true shape of the rings of Saturn. In 1656 he patented the first pendulum clock.(he was 26 years old)
Died at the age of:66 years old
He had poor health for all of his life.
  • John Dalton

    John Dalton
    Born: September 6th 1766
Died: July 27th 1844(he was 78 years old)
In 1803, he published his gas law which is now known as ‘Dalton’s law.’ In this law he basically stated that the total pressure exerted by a gaseous mixture is equal to the sum of the partial pressures of each individual component in a gas mixture.( he was 37 years old)
He also carried out his research to explain the shortage of color perception.
  • Amedeo Avogadro

    Amedeo Avogadro
    Born: August 9th 1776
Died: July 9th 1856(at the age of 80)
The Italian scientist, Amedeo Avogadro is most famous for his contributions to theory of moles and molecular weight, including what is known as Avogadro’s law. In respect of his contributions to the molecular theory, the number of molecules in one mole was renamed Avogadro’s number.( he was 35 years old)
Not much is known about Amedeo’s private life and his political activity; despite his unpleasant aspect.
