    Aboriginals were known for hunting and cooking their own food. They hunted native animals and picked native plants. The men went out and hunted with spears whereas the women gathered fruits and herbs from the native plants. They had a very healthy diet. They didn't hunt in just one place, they moved around.

    How Aboriginals prepared their food
    In coastal communities, small seafood like mussels and oysters were collected from rocky shores and mangrove habitats. In the mangroves, there were also mangrove worms and mangrove crabs. Aboriginal People used a fair bit of energy so fat was very important in their diet. They ate certain animal in the time of the year when they were fattest. Bird and many insects like Witchety Grubs, Bogong moths and green ants delivered some valuable fat sources.

    The Aboriginal people hunted native animals such as Kangaroo, Goanna, Water Rat, Bandicoot, Wombat and Barramundi. The women collected plants and fruit such as: Quandong, Moreton Bay Chestnut, Desert Yam, Bush tomato, Long yam, Bullrush Root, Wattle seeds, Nanda Plumbs, Lillypilly and they also collected Witchetty grubs.

    Crops began to grow there was more fruit and vegetables. Some people caught their own fish and ate wild plants such as spinich. Convicts didn't know much about native foods. Main drinks were tea and rum. Rum was imported from England to Australia regularly.

    A brick oven was often found outside. The oven was to cook bread, pastry and cakes. It was heated by a fire that was in the oven so that it was warm all the time. Bread was kneaded and set to rise before it was put in the oven. They would have one day a week where they baked.

    When the Europeans came to Australiathey didn't have a large diet. It didn't vary much. They had the basics: Dried peas, Flour, damper, meat, sugar, salt. seeds, vinegar ,vine cuttings, alcohol and rice. They brought live stock which was the best fresh meat. The meat from the live stock was made into stews and pies. Damper was made from flour.

    In the Colonial times if you lived near the sea you would be able to eat lobster, fish, clams and other sea food. People who lived in land ate a lot of deer, squirrels, bear and rabbit. People grew a lot of fruit and vegetables, that way they didn't have to buy any and could buy other things like meat if you couldn't hunt. The things you would drink were milk, water, sider and beer. Your welth determinded what you ate.

    In modern times they are more of a variety of drinks. there are more alcoholic drinks and new things such as soft drinks, milkshakes and mineral water. This new variety isn't always a good thing.

    Foods in Modern Multiculturalism
    We have many foods from different cultures in Australia. This is called multiculturalism. In every town and city there is a wide variety of foods , ranging from Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Mexican, Italian and many many more. Instead of hunting or growing their own food they are buying food from shopping centres. This isn't always the healthy option.
