  • The Bet

    Edward Mybridge made a $25,000 bet about how a horse will have all 4 feet in the air when at full speed. They took may rapid photos of the horse, and when reviewed an optical illusion of motion was created.
  • The Kenitoscope

    Museum-like parlors filled with Kenitoscopes were created by Thomas Edison. The idea of one person watching at a time was thought to bring more profit than using a projector.
  • The Projector

    The Lumiere Brothers used a projector instead of Thomas Edison's idea and coined the phrase "cinematographe". The short films they featured would last in duration of 30-60 seconds. They started in a Paris cafe.
  • Nickelodeons

    Comedy theatres would show short films between acts and the increase in popularity they tunred into "nickelodeons".
  • The Great Train Robbery

    Edwin Porter created the first feature length (12min) film called "The Great Train Robbery". This length was considerd extremely long compared to the usual short film.
  • Monopoly

    The Nickelodeons were reaching crowds of 26 million viewers each week. Busines owners took noice and tried to create monoploies.
  • The MPPC

    The MPPC was created by Thomas Edison as a way for him to capture all the profits and control the film industry. Independant studios were being attacked by him, but they relocated to the west coast to esacpe and have film freedom.
  • Rise of the Indie

    Independant films were promoting their actors and attracted huge crowds of people to their films in present day Hollywood. An actor named Charlie Chaplin made a profit of $1 million a year.
