    Land Grant Universitites
    A land grant university means that it is has been designated by the state congress to receive full benefits of the Morrill Acts. A land grant is a grant of public land.

    Morrill Act 1862
    The Morrill Act set aside federal lands to create colleges to help benefit mechanical arts and agricultural. This act granted the each senator can distribute 30,000 acres of funded land to help improve the agricultural and mechanical arts.

    Land Grant Universities In Arkansas
    The University of Arkansas was the first assisted college in Arkansas and is still a Land Grant University. This means it is under the Morrill Act of 1862. Later in 1890 the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff became a Land Grant University also.

    Isabel Bevier
    Isabel Bevier graduated with Ellen Richards. She later on started a FCS program at the University of Illinois. After opening the program the FCS building was named, "Bevier" in honor of her.
  • Carolyn Hunt

    Carolyn Hunt
    Carolyn Hunt conducted two important studies. One was the studies of immigrants and the other was ethnic populations in Chicago. She also collected dietary histories and information.
  • Ellen Richards

    Ellen Richards
    Ellen Richards began the first ever school lunch program in Boston Latin School. (the oldest public school in the country) Ellen wanted to provide an affordable, healthy school lunch for the poor or immigrants. Also known as the founder of the profession in FCS.

    W.O. Atwater
    W.O. Atwater invented the Bomb Calorimeter. He was also the founder of nutrition science, and known as the, "Father of Nutrition."

    The Rumford Kitchen was Chicago World Fair where nutritious lunches were sold. People could get good nutrition for a little cost. This is a significant place for FCS. It was named after Benjamin Thompson.
  • Lake Placid Conference

    Lake Placid Conference
    The AAFCS was founded at the tenth meeting at Lake Placid. This is also when Ellen Richards was elected president.
  • CF Langworthy

    CF Langworthy
    CF Langworthy was the Co-editor of the Journal of Home Economics. This book is still sold to this day, and improves Americans work everyday as people/economists.
  • Headquarters for Family Consumer and Science

    Headquarters for Family Consumer and Science
    The headquarters for Family Consumer and Sciences are the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. AAFCS is the only association where professional members represent from both FCS practice settings and content areas.

    The Smith Lever Act created by James Houston. This act established an extended service to educate rural Americans about advances in agriculture and technology.

    The Smith Hughes Act was established in 1917 to provide federal aid to the states for promoting CTE. (Career and technical education) It also promoted agricultural and industrial trades in home economics.

    Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
    In 1917 the ADA was founded by a group of people wanting to educate Americans in nutrition. This was formerly named the American Dietetics Association.
  • Lulu C. Graves

    Lulu C. Graves
    LuLu C. Graves was the first president in American Dietitian. LuLu served president from 1917-1920.

    Vocational Education Act 1963
    The Vocational Education Act provided funding/grants to help improve and maintain vocational education. The funds were set aside fro occupations in high demand.

    Vocational Amendment Act 1968
    The vocational amendment was created to authorize funds and to help locals establish vocational education programs in high school. This allowed students to access material and improved CTE curriculum.

    The Vocational Amendment required states receiving funding had to eliminate gender bias, discrimination and stereotyping. This amendment also brought in more funding for vocational education.

    Carl Perkins Act
    The Carl Perkins Act was established to improve education programs, integrate academic, meet gender quality and meet special populations needs. The act provides federal funds to support these needs.
  • Flossie M. Byrd

    Flossie M. Byrd
    Flossie Byrd was the first African American to be chosen to receive the AAFCS foundation award. Flossie earned a degree at Prairie A&M. Flossie taught in home economics at a high school and then moved on to a university.
  • Martha Rensselaer

    Martha Rensselaer
    Martha Rensselaer was the president of the AAFCS. She helped develop the Extension Service Programs at Cornell University, where she was also a professor. This extension program was focused on home economics and agriculture.
  • New Name for the Profession

    New Name for the Profession
    In 1994, the American Home Economics Association voted to chance the name of the profession to Family and Consumer Sciences. That is now the American Association of Family Consumer Sciences.
