  • Adolph de Meyer

    Adolph de Meyer
    -Born in Paris, gravitated toward London in 1890's.
    -Considered the first fashion photographer.
    -In 1914, Condé Nast acknowledged him as first official fashion photographer for American Vogue. He was also contracted to work at Vanity Fair.
    -By 1921 he said goodbye to Nast and went on to work for Harper's Bazaar magazine in Paris, as chief photographer - which he did for 16 years.
    -He took photos of people such as;
    Mary Pickford (Canadian actress) - 1920
    John Barrymore (American actor) - 1920
  • Louise Dahl-Wolfe

    Louise Dahl-Wolfe
    -Enjoyed taking photos outdoors, ex. Africa.
    -She was an inspiration for other photographers ex. Irving Penn & Richard Avedon.
    -Milton H. Greene was her assistant at one point. Milton is famous for his many photographs of Marilyn Monroe.
    -From 1933-1960 Louise did freelance advertising/fashion work in her New York Studio.
    -From 1936-1958 she was a staff fashion photographer for Harper's Bazaar.

    Martin Munkácsi
    "I suddenly understood that photography can fix eternity in a moment..." -Quote Martin said. -Worked for a fashion magazine: "Die Dame"
    -1934 Martin left for New York, signed on with Harper's Bazaar and began taking lots of great photographs.
    -He liked to leave the studio often and experience the outdoors.

    Erwin Blumenfeld
    -1st got a camera when he was 11 & started taking/developing photos right away.
    -In 1932 he moved to Amsterdam. This move boosted his interest in photography when he discovered a full equiped dark room in the building.
    -In 1935, French magazine "Photographie" published one of his 1st ever photos for the 1st time!
    -He moved again in 1936 & he began photographing well known people like Cecil B. (photographer)!
    -By 1950 he was the highest paid photographer in the world.

    George Hoyingen-Huene
    -During Russian revolution he fled to London, then later to Paris.
    -By 1925, he made his way up to chief of photography for American Vogue.
    -By 1935, he moved to NYC to work for Harper's Bazaar.
    -Later he relocated to Hollywood and began taking glamourous portraits of film industry. He was a great portalist beyond fashion!
    -He has photographed;

    -Marlene Dietrich (Actress/Singer) - 1930's

    Cecil Beaton
    Video of Cecil-Beaton 1st discovered photography from his nanny, who when he was growing up had a Kodak 3A Camera.
    -In 1927 Vogue hired Cecil.
    -He wasn't a skilled technical photographer. BUT he was able to take great photographs with a model/scene & the perfect shutter release moment.
    -In 1931 he became a photographer for Vogue UK.
    -In 1938 he insterted Anti-Semitic phrases into Vogue, issue had to be recalled and printed. Cecil was fired.

    Horst P. Horst
    -In 1930 Horst met another fashion photographer from Vogue named George Hoyingen Huene. Horst became his photographic assistant, occasional model and lover.
    -Winter 1930, they travelled to England and met up with photographer Cecil Beaton, working for Vogue UK.
    -In 1932 his first exhibition was hung.
    -He has photographed many great people;
    -Noel Coward (Playwriter) - 1933
    -Cole Porter (Composer) -1934

    -Worked as associate for Vogue Mag Art Dept. before Photography.
    -In 1943 Iriving had his 1st photographic cover for Vogue!
    -In 1950 he founded a studio in New York & started making advertising photographs.
    -Irving was one of the 1st photographers to use simple grey/white backdrops. He used this technique very effectively!

    Francesco Scavullo
    Francesco on Fashion -In 1945 Francesco worked for studio that produced fashion catalogs.
    -Francesco worked as photographer Horst P. Horst's assistant for three years to study the techniques.
    -In 1948 Scavullo made a cover for 17 magazine which started up a contract with the magazine.
    -He soon after opened up a studio in New York.

    Richard Avedon's photographs-In 1945 Richards photos were in Junior's Bazaar.
    -By 1946 his photos were in Harper's Bazaar!
    -Also in 1946 he set up a studio & took photos for magazines ex. Vogue and Life.
    -Eventually he became chief photographer for Harper's B.
    -In 1952 he became staff editor/photographer for magazine, "Theatre Arts"
    -He liked outdoor locations & models to show emotion.
    -End of 1950's he shot inside using stobe lighting.
    -Photos for campaigns ex. Versace, Calvin Klein

    Patrick discussing Photography-In 1960 Patrick got 1st camera,Patrick was very interested & learned how to develop film, etc.
    -He worked at a photo store "Le Havre" taking passport & wedding photos.
    -In 1975 he went to NY & started photography. His photos were obviously good because he gained recognition from magazines ex. Elle.
    -1992 he had a 12 yr collab. with magazines Vanity Fair & Vogue.
    -Has shot many campaign photos; Dior, Chanel, etc.
    -Since 1992 he's worked with Harper's B.

    Annie Leibovitz Interview-Her very 1st experience with photography was in the Philippines during the Vietnam War.
    -In 1970 Annie was staff photographer for Rolling Stone Magazine.
    -In 1973 Annie became chief photographer of Rolling Stone! She kept that position for another 10 years or until 1983.
    -Richard Avedon (photographer) was a great influence/ source of inspiration for Annie.
    -In 1980 Annie began working with Vanity Fair due to her unique style (colour, lighting, etc)

    -To get noticed as a photographer he once dyed his hair pink.

    -In 1983 Mario's work 1st appeared in Vogue.
    -Marios photographed many legends during his 35 yrs as a photographer.
    -His work has been in many magazines ex. Vogue, GQ, Allure, etc.
    -Marios exhibited his work from 1997-present.
    -Mario is involved in many charities ex. amFAR
    -He has 1.6mil followers on Instagram.

    Some current events the fashion photographers are doing;
    -According to "The Daily Telegraph", Mario Testino is in Sydney to guest edit Australia Vogue for month of April.
    -Annie Leibovitz has an exhibition called "Women: New Portraits" which opened in London on January 26th 2016.
    -She also shot photos for the Pirelli Calendar.
    -The Pirelli Calendar is a big deal seeing as it only comes out once a year, and is available for a limited time. Good example of Principle of Media Arts (Duration).
