    Rumford Kitchen

    In this year the Rumford Kitchen were open. A typical Rumford arrangement consisted of a brick range, enclosing and separating a series of fires, above each of which a pot or stew-pan fitted into a circular, iron-rimmed opening. This kitchen is the foundation of family and consumer science. Very important people visited this kitchen including the famous Ellen Richard.

    Ellen Swallow Richards

    Ellen was a MIT graduate & chemistry faculty member,She believed science could be used to improve health & well-being of people. She instigated a series of annual “Lake Placid Conferences” that became known as the foundation of the home economics movement. Richards's first interest was in improving the household's well-being by using sanitary and nutrition sciences, an objective that was passed on to the movement.

    Eleven leaders gathered in Lake Placid, New York. “Home Economics” was adopted as the name for the new field of study

  • AHEA

    American Home Economics Association was created and the first Journal of Home Economics was published
  • Smith Lever Act

    Established a national Cooperative Extension Service that extended outreach programs through land-grant universities to educate rural Americans
  • Smith Hughes Act

    Home Economics was a part of the high school curriculum and supported by federal funding.It provided federal aid to the states for the purpose of promoting precollegiate vocational education in agricultural and industrial trades and in home economics.

    The vocational education act of 1963 was enacted by congress to offer new and expanded vocational education programs to bring job training into harmony with the industrial.

    The Vocational Amendments in 1968 addressed the nation's social and economic problems and continued funding for students who were at risk or with disabilities.The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 replaces preexisting laws (collectively referred to as the Vocational Rehabilitation Act) to extend and revise the authorization of grants to States for vocational rehabilitation services, with special emphasis on services to those with the most severe disabilities.
  • Vocational Amendment of 1976

    The 1976 Amendments to the Vocational Equity Act of 1963, required states receiving federal funding for vocational education to develop and carry out activities and programs to eliminate gender bias, stereotyping, and discrimination in vocational education.
  • Carl Perkin Act

    The Vocational Education Act of 1984, often referred to as the Carl D. Perkins Act or the Perkins Act, authorizes federal funds to support vocational education programs. One of the goals for the Perkins Act is to improve the access of either those who have been underserved in the past or those who have greater-than-average educational needs.
