History of English

  • Period: 500 BCE to 410

    Roman Invasion

    Julius Caesar heads first Roman invasion.
    They left not much of their Latin language but a lot of Germanic tribes arrived after them.

    Anglo-Saxon dialects arose

    They came with more simple useful vocabulary for simple everyday things. E.g. house, woman...
  • Period: 597 to 597

    Christian missionaries arrival

    They brought the jumble sales and with it, new latin words like "Bishop" or "font"
  • Period: 800 to 800

    Vikings invasion

    Viking brought action-man words like ransack, die, give and take and the phrase "watch out for that man".
  • Period: 1066 to 1154

    The Norman Conquest

    William the Conqueror brought french words for all official business like "judge, justice or evidence" but Latin was still used for Christian ceremonies.

    English around the world

    English took words all over the globe during the empire travels leaving new varieties of the language around it.

    William Shakespeare phrases invention

    Shakespeare's poetry showed the world the rich, expressive, vibrant and emotional power of English language with its new expressions.

    When the British landed in America adopted native American words for the new plants and animals and then Dutch, German and Italian vocabulary were added to.

    The King James Bible

    The new translation of the Bible emerged with a meaningful root message comprehension. It was handy and adopted all along Britain and developed a whole metaphoric and moral glossary still used.
