History of Education Timeline

  • American Colonial Period (USA)

    When European settlers first migrated to America, most education took place in the homes of parents that could teach their children reading and arithmetic skills.
  • Massachusetts Law (USA)

    Massachusetts enacted a law that required every town to establish a school. This law was not always followed by everyone.
  • Two-Track Educational System (USA)

    Thomas Jefferson proposed a "track" that divided the laboring and the learned. Basically, this was a ranking the genuises from the others.
  • Free School for the Poor Only (USA)

    Pennsylvania passed a law for free education to be available to poor children only. They believed that rich people were able to pay for their child's schooling.
  • First Public School (USA)

    The first public school opened in Boston, Massachusetts.
  • Free School for Everyone (USA)

    Massachusetts passed a law that made all grade levels in public schools available for everyone that attended.
  • Territorial Superintendent

    Henry H. McAfee was the first superintendent to be elected. Their role was to supervise schools, prepare and distribute a course of study, Prepare,in print forms of records, and to the legislature the condition of the schools.
  • O.J. Goldrick establishes the first schools in Auraria (now Denver)

    The first sunday school was opended, at the home of a preacher.
  • First public school established

    It was in a log cabin,and only had 13 students.
  • Native Americans (USA)

    Congress makes it illegal for Native Americans to be taught in their native languages. This forced them to go to off-reservation boarding school and learn there in a language they understood.
  • Superintendent Abolished

    A law abolished the office of territorial superintendent and provided that the territorial treasurer discharge the duties of the office for $100 per year.
  • The eighth territorial assembly

    The eighth territorial assembly recreated the office of public instruction at a salary of $1,000 per year.
    When Colorado became a state in 1876, Joseph Shattuck of Greeley became the first superintendent of public instruction. The qualifications for the office were that the person must be a citizen of the state and at least 21 years of age. Also at that time the Board of Education consisted of the Attorney General, Secretary of State, and the State Superintendent of Public Instruction.
  • Two types of high schools were created by law

    Union: Only part of the county's elementary schools wanted to form a high school.
    County: All of the county's high schools were required to participate in forming a high school.
  • Joseph C. Shattuck

    Joseph helped Horace M Hale organzie the teachers association.
  • Hoarce M. Hale

    Hale was an educator, superintendent of Public Education and the second president of the university of Colorado serving from 1887-1892
  • Plessy vs. Ferguson (USA)

    This was a court case in Louisiana that resulted in black and white segregation in all public schools.
  • Chinese Immigrants (USA)

    The United States Supreme Court required all California public schools to provide education for chinese immigrants.
  • Colorado Board of Education

    Colorado Board of Education was founded in 1948.
  • The first Colorado State Board of Education was elected in November 1950

    Mrs. Nettie S. Freed was named as the first Commissioner of Education. However, at the time the Constitution was amended in 1948, Mrs. Freed set out to abolish her own professional position. which abolished her position as elected state superintendent of instruction and provided for a commissioner of education to be appointed by the State Board of Education.
  • Community Colleges (USA)

    The federal Tribal Colleges Act requires every Indian Reservation to have a community college on the land.
