Thomas Jefferson Introduces measures for Public Education
This was the spawning of what would become public education. His early efforts caused ripples that would not be silenced and have become crucial to our country. -
Noah Webster publishes his Blue-Backed Speller
Noah Webster created one of the first nationally used textbooks. This book, I feel, is what helped distinguish America from Britain, along with formulated early education. -
Horace Mann becomes Secretary of the new Board of Education
MOST IMPORTANT: Horace Mann BiographyHorace Mann encouraged education to be provided by and for the public. Education must be of high and equal quality. -
Education after the Civil War
Literacy among the blacks exploded after the civil war. This turned a large portion of the population into contributing and producing members of society, at least more so than they were before. -
Immigration
During this period of America, there was a booming amount of immigrants coming to America looking for work. This influx of immigrants brought more students to public schools. The education of immigrants helped solidify the unity and diversity of America. -
Progressive Reform
Education became much more hands on and more applicable to life. This was a period where I feel kids saw the importance of education for their own benefit. -
The Committee of Ten
The Committee of TenMOST IMPORTANT: A committee of educators recommended a nationwide standardization of High School curriculum. This brought the nations views of what the purpose of High School was into view. High Schools developed kids into contributing citizens of society and encourage some onward to college. -
John Dewey: The Child and the Curriculum
MOST IMPORTANT: John Dewey's view of Curriculum
John Dewey taught in his book "The Child and the Curruculum" that the focus of teaching should be on the student. At this point there was too much emphasis on the material, books, paper, pencil and educators were not turning their attention to the student infront of them. He was a true pioneer in the progressive reform of education. -
The Gary Plan
The Gary Plan was the predecessor of the High Schools we have today. It was an amazing facility that taught a tremendous variety of life skills and through a progressive fashion. -
High School Movement
The establishement of secondary schools. This continued to grow through the 40's. Having secondary schools was formative to prepare the public to pursue further education after public education. -
Brown vs Board of Education
Brown was litigating for the desegregation of white and black schools. Although this victory for Brown didn't solve the segregation problems at large, it was a major step forward in the civil rights movement. -
IDEA
What is IDEA?MOST IMPORTANT: Students with dissabilities were now given a fair level of education in the public school system. This helped bring students with dissabilities into the publics eye and help them reach their potential, which is greater than what many realize. -
The Standards-Based Movement
Schooling began to be assessed more systematically and frequently. This is crucial to understanding what is working in education and what needs improvement. This was paired with the need to elevate our schooling standards. -
A Nation at Risk Report
A Nation at RiskMOST IMPORTANT: A report created during Ronald Reagan's presidency where it implored America to raise its educational standards. Some aspects of the report are contested, but the effects of the report brought a more concise requirement to High School education. The raising of education standards is always a good thing in my mind.
