    Common Schools

    During this movement of time the idea was taught that schools should stick to teaching the three R's along with history, geography, and math. Designed by Horace Mann to be nonsectarian there were several disputes among American on how they should be taught. Most notable of these groups were the Catholic immigrants and the Native American who though that the Bible (King James Version) being used to teach was wrong and gave no consideration to their own values of religion.

In 1837 he was appoined to the new seat of Secretary of Education. while in office he fought to change the way schools were educating children in that he thought his "common schools" would be the great equalizer that Americans needed to come together.
