History of Education

  • First Public School

The first public school opened in Massachusetts. Before this, only the wealthy went to school. This created an increase in the number of students attending school and number of schools in the country.
  • Immigration

Between the years 1900 and 1914, over 13 million immigrants came to the United States. With the huge influx of immigrants, it now became the job of the public schools to teach these students how to be "Americans".
  • Assembly Line Schools

The 1930's schools began to run like an assembly line. Students would make their way from room to room, each designated for different subjects. Most schools, especially in the upper grades, still function this way today.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

In this court case, the final ruling declared that students of color and white students were allowed to attend the same schools. It took many years for the desegregation of schools to become official, as the government received backlash to the decision.
  • IDEA

Public Law 101-476, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) amends the Public Law 94-142. It renames it and requires transition services. Autism and traumatic brain injury are added to the eligibility list.
  • Universal Preschool

Preschool in Georgia is now available to those who choose to send their child. This raises the preschool attendance to over half of the state's four year olds.
  • Columbine

Two students from Columbine High School kill 15 and injure 23 in their Littleton, Colorado school. Schools crack down on their safety measures, but school shootings become more common.
  • Higher Education Act

This act is amended and reauthorized. Higher education is more accessible to those in the low and middle income range. More people now have access to achieve higher education.
  • IDEA

H.R. 1350, The Individuals with Disabilities Improvement Act (IDEA 2004), adds to IDEA. This modification includes changes to the IEP process, school decisions in special education placement, and RTI is put in place.
  • AAIDD

The American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD) replaces the former American Association on Mental Retardation (AAMR). This reinforces the concept of people-first language.
