The northwest land ordinance was passed by the confederation congress. It created the northwest territory. It influenced education in a few ways. The first is that as part of the ordinance congress required a university for statehood. This shows control over education by the national government. This ordinance also promoted freedom of slaves which helps in civil rights movements later on and greatly changes education.

The Secondary School Movement began in 1810, but lasted about 30 years. The United States found that they needed to prepare college bound students with basic skills in the main subjects and soon many secondary schools were formed.

The first edition of Webster's Dictionary was published.
It was the first American Dictionary and changed the way English was taught here. -
horace Mann was appointed secretary of the Board of Education in 1837. He became an education reformer.

This was a report that stated that American schools were failing and made 38 suggestions for reform, may of which were used and can be seen in schools today.

This act required standardized testing for schools recieving public funding and provided funding for disadvantaged students in Title I schools, and required adequate yearly progress.

Standardized testing has been growing for quite some time and continues to do so as Americans move more and have more desire to be competetive world wide they feel it is moreimportant to be on the same page as others, and testing is how we see if we are there.

This is a movement toward more options than public school. It continues today.
