    Education was important in the colonies. This was mainly a family responsibility. Religion was a key element in the 13 colonies. Punishment was consider appropriate at that time.

    NOAH WEBSTER   1758-1843
    He is also known as the Father of American Scholarship and Education. He made the first America dictionary.
    He wrote, “Now is the time and this the country in which we may expect success in attempting changes to language, science, and government. Let us then seize the present moment and establish a national language as well as a national government.”
    He also made the American Spelling book.

    Although the Declaration of Independence don't talk specifically about education, it gave the foundation for the educational system. It talks about the pursuit of happiness and how that could be possible without education.
  • NORTHWEST LAND ORDINANCE 1785

    Recognize the importance of education, Act 3 of the document begins, "Religion, morality, and knowledge, being necessary to good government and the happiness of mankind, schools and the means of education shall forever be encouraged." It stipulates that a section of land in every township of each new state be reserved for the support of education.

    Before this due to the Jim Crow laws that mandated separation of African Americans and whites in public restroom, facilities, etc.
