    At first parents where in change of teaching their students. Then the government changed it so that for every 50 homes there needed to be a teacher for reading and writing. But for every 100 homes there need to be a grammar school for the students to attend.

    First high school was opened to boys only and was meant to be a replacement for Latin Grammar school. These schools developed a lot of success, so people started pushing for girls to be able to attend high school.But the girls school was shut down shortly after because they weren't as professionally driven like the boys.

    During this time is when public schools were developed. Schools were paid for by state taxes. The school boundaries cover a lot more land than ever before.

    Population Growth and Immigration in the 19th centuary

    During this time the population went from 13 million people to 32 million. Most immigrants came from Ireland, Germany, and Northern Europe.

    Horace Mann
    Horace Mann was given the nickname "Father of American Education." He was a politician and an education reformer. He was known for changing education and making sure teachers had proper education.

    The Impact of John Dewey
    Dewey was known for being "the real spokesman for intellectual America in the Progressive Era." He decided that the old form of curriculum needed to be changed so that it was more focused on the children. He believed that education included not only intellectual but physical, emotional, and social needs.

  • The Measurement Movement

    This movement include the development of the Alfred-Binet IQ test. World War I was happening at this time and they military needed a way to test their mens intelligence to see who was fit for the job.

    Because many of the men who fought in the war had their education interrupted, Congress passed the G.I. bill which allows solider to have free schooling.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    Brown vs. Board of Education
    During this time the schools were segregated, but that just didn't seem fair. The supreme court passed the Brown vs. Board of Education that allowed colored students to attend any school they wanted to. This event is want start the Civil Rights Movement. Many students had the chance to desegregate their schools but they chose not to.

    This movement wasn't just for education but included the rights for all humans in all aspects in life. It also fought for all people, not just the African Americans but as well as for those who were struggling from poverty.
  • Sputnik and NDEA

    Sputnik was a Soviet Satellite. With the launching of this device, the United States became very scared that they were going to lose the Cold war because our engineering was so far behind theirs.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    This law was pasted by President Lyndon B Johnson. It includes that every student, no matter what race, rich or poor, should have the chance to get a good education.
  • Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act

    Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act
    Before this act was passed many students with disabilities weren't able to attend school because they weren't excepted. This act says that students with disabilities have the same right to have a free education as anyone else. This act insures that each student will receive the proper education to fit their needs.

  • A Nation at Risk

    Ronald Reagan presented A Nation at Risk which is standards that students had to complete in order to graduate high school. The schools were failing and needed some sort of motivation to lift them up and succeed.

    No Child Left Behind was sign by President George W. Bush. This program insured that students would not fall away, Each state was to determine the standards that their students were to meet and help them to meet them.
