Common School Movement
The common school movement was started by Horace Mann. Mann did this in hopes of creating public funding for all schools in the community to create a more equal learning environment for all students. -
Freedmen's Bureau
The Freedmen's Bureau was a school established during the aftermath of the civil in the south. It's purpose was to give millions of former black slaves and poor whites in the south an education, shelter and health services. -
The Kalamazoo School Case
The Kalamazoo School Case was what brought the original idea of having public schools. This case argued that states had the right to tax people for support towards to better fund public school and help create a better learning environment. -
Compulsory School Attendance Laws
The Compulsory School Attendance Laws was created to specify a set number of days that students are required to be in school. As well as a set amount of days that students are allowed to be absent for, also penalties for students who did not meet these requirements. -
American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Was founded
The American federation of teachers is a labor union that primarily represents teachers as a whole. The AFT main purpose is to give its members better pay and working conditions.The AFT is also an advocate for public school and negotiates school related aspects such as class size, students discipline books, and teaching materials. -
Brown vs. Board of Education
Brown vs Board of Education was a supreme court case that argued that the racial segregation of public school was unconstitutional. It was also argued that school for colored children were not equal to school for white children. Overall it was unanimously decided that was true and public school would no longer have racial segregation. -
Little Rock Nine
The Little Rock Nine Were a group of nine black students who first enrolled in a all-white Central High School. This was one of the test of the Brown vs. Board of Education, which ruled that segregated schools were unconstitutional. To protect the students President Dwight D. Eisenhower had sent troops to help protect these students from racial violence, which brought a spark to the Civil Rights Movement. -
IDEA Act
The Individual with Disabilities Act is a law that ensures all students age 2- 21 with disabilities a free special education specifically made to help benefit that specific child. -
First Charter School
The first charter school was created in St.Paul Minnesota back in 1992. Charter school that still receive public funding, but have more freedom to design classrooms to fit student needs. -
The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB)
The No Child Left Behind Act was passed during the year of 2001. The NCLB requires for all students grade 3-8 and once in high school to be tested in both reading and math, and all students are expected to meet or exceed state standards. The NCLB was also created to give all students in the U.S. a fair and equal education to close the students achievement gap.
