    In 1635, Boston Latin School was the first public school in the U.S. It still remains the oldest school in America. The school was founded to help scholars become fluent readers and have better grammar skills. They wanted men to be able to read the bible. During this time period, women were not allowed to attend school.

    In 1862, The First Morrill Act or also know at the "Land Grant Act" law was put into place. The purpose of the law was to donate public land to states. When the land is sold the money was used to help out the colleges.

    In 1892, the Pledge of Alliance was first introduced into public schools on Columbus Day. Also, the Committee of Ten was established to standardize the American high school curriculum.

    In 1926, This was the first time that the Scholastic Aptitude Test, also know as the SAT, was introduced into all schools.

    November 8th of 1965 the Higher Education Act was signed at Southwest Texas State College. The purpose of the act was to increase financial aid to make getting a higher education more affordable. It also provides scholarships, student loans and creates a National Teachers Corps.

    The Equal Educational Oppurinties Act was passed in 1974, that prohibits discrimination in schools. Makings schools overcome barriers between races.

    Apple Computer was produced in 1977, it was the first successful personal computer. The Apple IIe became very popular in schools, many schools used this computer to have learning programs on it such as the Oregon Trail and Odell Lake

    On January 8th, 2001, the No Child Left Behind Act was approved by Congress and signed by President George W. Bush. This Act replaces the Bilingual Education Act of 1968. This holds schools accountable for students achievements. The school is also in charge of making sure all students meet all required goals.
