Ruled in 1896, the court case Plessy v Ferguson made it legal to segregate people of color from the rest of society, including in schools. Many of the schools occupied by people of color were much lower in quality and did not make for adequate learning conditions. This cause was the cause for much rampant racism that still exists today.

The case Brown v Board of Education marked a major change in the way that school systems work. The case dealt with multiple African American families that challenged the board of education in Topeka on its rules of segregation. The case made it all the way up to the Supreme Court where it was ruled unanimously that segregation in public schools (and other public places) was considered unconstitutional, overturning the earlier case Plessy v Ferguson.
