    Franklin and jefferson

    Benjamin Franklin wanted everyone to have the opportunity to read as many books and have the opportunity to learn, so he opened the first public library. He also started a secondary school in Philadelphia open to everyone regardless of religion. Jefferson started a pubic system of education, making the first school districts, and having school not be just for the wealthy, Jefferson also established the university of Virginia.

    He was the secretary of the state of board of education in Massachusetts, he worked to establish free public education for every boy and girl. the first public state supported schools were called common schools. he tried to standardize schools, establish teacher-training schools, established free libraries, increased state funding for public schools, and tried to make schools nonsectarian.

    half the rural population abandoned farming, city dwellers lacked education, children education was limited due to working in factories"progressives" fought for a more democratic place.
    1920, all states require children to attend elementary school.
    John Dewey made classrooms more flexible and free.
    Maria Montessori helped kids who had difficulty learning, developed the "Montessori Method", took care of all of a kids needs, not just educational.
