  • The first infant school was established by Robert Owen (1771-1858) in New Lanark, Scotland, in 1816.

  • 1825 Liverpool Institute opened: other proprietary day schools followed (King's College School 1829, University College School 1830 etc).

  • 1841 Cheltenham College established, followed by other boarding schools (Marlborough 1843, Rossall 1844, Radley 1847, Wellington 1853 etc).

  • 1865 Girls admitted to Cambridge Local Examinations.

  • 1870 Girls admitted to Oxford Local Examinations.

  • 1893 School leaving age raised to 11.

  • 1899 School leaving age raised to 12.

  • 1904 Secondary Regulations: introduced a subject-based curriculum.

  • 1911 Central schools opened.

  • 1923 Secondary education for all became Labour Party policy.

  • 1946 Free milk provided for all pupils.

  • 1947 School leaving age raised to 15

  • 1960 Teacher training course: extended from two years to three.

  • 1968 School Meals Agreement: teachers were no longer obliged to supervise children at lunchtimes.

  • 1973 School leaving age raised to 16.

  • 1975 Sex Discrimination Act: had effects on school admissions, appointments and curricula.

  • 1983 9-13 Middle Schools

  • 1984 Schools Council abolished

  • 2002 City academies: the first 3 opened.

  • 2003 City academies: 9 more opened.

  • 2010 SATs: a quarter of all primary schools boycotted the tests.

  • 2010 Higher education: fewer places and vastly increased tuition fees
