History of Cell Discoveries

  • Hans and Zacharias Janssen

    Hans and Zacharias Janssen
Invented first Single Lens and Compound Lens Optical Microscope with 9x magnification. This invention helped other scientists see tiny objects, which led to the discovery of cells.
  • Robert Hooke

    Robert Hooke
He discovered cells when he observed honeycomb - like structure in a cork. This was the cell wall of dead tissue from a tree. He coined the term "cell" for the individual compartments of the honeycomb structure. He used a Primitive Compound Microscope.
  • Anton Van Leeuwenhoek - "Father of Microbiology"

Anton Van Leeuwenhoek - "Father of Microbiology"
Discovered the living cell by looking at multicellular organisms in pond water through a microscope. He also discovered the first protozoa and bacteria.
  • Matthias Jakob Schleiden

    Matthias Jakob Schleiden
He proposed that all plant tissues are made up of cells. Cells are the basic building blocks of plants.
  • Theodor Schwann

    Theodor Schwann
He concluded that not only plants but animal tissue as well is also made up of cells. He states that, "Cells are organisms and all organisms consist of one or more cells. Also, the cell is the basic unit of structure for all organisms."
  • Rudolph Virchow - "Father of Modern Pathology"

Rudolph Virchow - "Father of Modern Pathology"
He stated that, "Cells develop only from existing cells. Diseased cells come from healthy cells. Cells are the basic unit of the body that have to be studied to understand diseases."
