History of car engines

  • First car engine

    First car engine
The first engine to power a car was the steam engine that was invented in 1712 by Thomas Newcomen. Even though it was a breakthrough in automobile engineering, steam powered engines even though very realiable were not efficient. Not just were they inefficient but they were also very heavy so they could not haul as much weight and were limited to a certain number of roads. Therefore as a result engineers constantly were looking for a better alternative to steam engines.

  • First four stroke engine

    First four stroke engine
Otto used four strokes to complete one cycle in his four stroke engine. During the first stroke, gas was sucked into the cylinder. In the second stroke that sucked gas will be compressed. During the third and fourth stroke the compressed gas was ignited causing an explosion and then the wheel wheel pushed the piston back.

  • Intro to more efficient engines

    Intro to more efficient engines
Otto and Langen were the masterminds behind the introduction of efficiently running engines. According to them and factual evidence, it was proven that their engines ran 30% more efficiently. What made their engine so efficient was their up-down motion of the piston was converted to rotary motion for the first time by the use of a rack and pinion and clutch.

  • First gas engine in the world

First gas engine in the world
First ever gasoline engine was developed by Carl Benz was a two seater and was only successful by 1885. Successful meant that he accomplished compact high-speed single-cylinder four-stroke engine installed horizontally at the rear, the tubular steel frame, the differential and three wire-spoked wheels. The engine output was 0.75 hp (0.55 kW).

  • First gas engine in America

    First gas engine in America
The Charles and Frank Duryea brothers invented the first gasoline powered car in America. The engine was installed on a horse buggy that they purchased for $70. After purchasing the buggy, they installed their 4 horse power engine which used a friction transmission, spray carburetor and low tension ignition. The gas used was actually coal.

  • Henry Fords gas powered engine

    Henry Fords gas powered engine
Even though Henry Ford's engine was produced by 1893, it wasnt till 1896 when he made his engine public. He did this as it wasnt till 1896 when his engine was installed in a car. By the end of the year he sold what he called the Quadracycle, for $200 and used the money to build another one. This engine ran on coal as well and was quite successful.

  • Diesel engines

    Diesel engines
1897 marked the introduction of the first working diesel engine that was developed by Rudolph Diesel. The engine yielded 75% increase in fuel efficiency. Diesel engines were very big due to their higher compression ratios. Their size did not affect their importance as they were commercially sucessful due to the unimportant fact of size in commercial vehicles.

  • First six cylinder engine

    First six cylinder engine
Charles S. Ro Rolls Royce Silver Ghost was the most successful and most long lasting car in its time. After being introduced in 1906, it remained in production till 1925. It was very heavy car but still runs efficiently today. Its cylinders were cast in two blocks of three, inclusive of heads, which eliminated head gaskets and the chances of their blowing along with its seven-main-bearing crankshaft and stiff crankcase.

  • Direct Injection

    Direct Injection
Direct injection was invented by Jonas Hesselman in 1925. It was controlled mechanically and linked to technical problems. These engines used unique high pressure pumps that could produce high powered engines. One example of this engine will be the crown victorias. These engines were high maintenence due to their expensive pumps.
  • First diesel passenger car

    First diesel passenger car
Mercedes Benz introduced the first diesel passenger car at the berlin auto show in 1936. It was a success due to the high fuel efficiency. People preffered better fuel economy becasue of the lack of filling stations. Not only were they more fuel efficient but they also developed more power with a compression ration of 20.5 : 1.
