History of Antisemitism

  • 1 CE

    Romans conquer Palestine

The Romans conquer Palestine and proceeded to try to convert Jews to the Roman religion and when they did not they were labeled as stubborn or clannish. The Jews then began to argue over whether this pressure to change should be met with rebellion or peace.
  • 1500

    Jews become separate from Christians

Christians ostracize Jews and confine them to ghettos. As the hatred between the two grew the Jews increasingly became portrayed as devils and began to be blamed for every catastrophe like natural disasters.
  • Race

The walls of the ghettos began to come down but the idea of race was being introduced at the same time. Race was said to explain all the cultural differences between the Jews and Christians.
  • Aryans

Aryans were supposed to be the master race and were thought to be above the other people like the Jews. Although the Jews had been persecuted because of their beliefs, they were now being persecuted because of their race.
  • Racism

People began to see the world through the lens of racism and so they began to believe that some races were better than others. Especially during the early 1900's, people began to blame the Jews for everything wrong that was occurring in the world again.
  • Jew Misrepresentation

The Nazi socialist party began to portray the Jews as taking over the German government and as everywhere withing society. In reality the Jews made up less than 1% of the population and only 1/4 of the government.
  • Hitler/Holocaust

Hitler and his followers round up Jews and put them in concentration camps around Germany. These killed Jews by the millions and forced others into hard labor.
