In 1951, the Hathaway Company of Vermont hired them to create advertisements for their shirts. Ogilvy had an idea: Brand the man under the shirt, not the shirt. He set out to create a sophisticated image and chose a distinguished-looking model. Ogilvy’s creative instincts told him to surround him with a mysterious air. So he purchased a black eye patch for the model. Overnight The man in the Hathaway shirt became one of the most recognized men in America. -
