This is the first record of welding used to bond metal. They used lap welds to make small bronze boxes. They "Welded" the metal by hammering it together.
-
In 1800 Sir Humphry Davy of England used two carbon electrodes and a battery to create an arc between the electrodes and a piece of metal.
-
Auguste De Meritens joined two lead plates using an electrical arc
-
Nikolai N Bernardos got a patent for the welding process
-
C.L. Coffin was granted the first U.S. patent for the process of arc welding. This was also the first time recorded that metal had been melted with an electrode.
-
Strohmenger of England invented the coated metal electrode which was coated in clay and lime but created a more stable arc
-
At the same time the coated electrode was developed the spot welder, seam welder, projection welder, and flash butt welder.
-
The automatic welder used a bare (non-coated) electrode, and an electric arc. It was invented by P.O. Nobel of GE. They used it to repair worn motor shafts and worn crane wheels.
-
Stud welding is when wood decking is attacked over a metal structure
-
Gained popularity quickly because it could be used to weld steel effectively and economically.
