provided 160 acres of federal land to anyone who agreed to farm the land. people moved out west for free land. Even free slaves could put a claim up to get that land. Life was very difficult as a farmer and buying and selling products made it more difficult. -
American Equal Rights Association
worked to secure equal rights for all American citizens, especially regarding race, sex, or color. In 1869 Stanton and Susan B. Anthony wrote the 19th amendment which gave women the right to vote. -
Farmers alliance
The alliance was put together to improve the conditions for farmers and lower prices for supplies. The idea was to give producers more influencers in buying their supplies and marketing products. -
Spanish American War
The conflict between Spain and the united states because by reasons like: U.S. support of cubas independence, the Sinking of the USS Maine, and yellow journalism. Writers exaggerated what goes on in war to reel people in but made it worse. Because of the war, Puerto Rico and Guam are a part of the united states. -
Niagara Movement
A movement by African Americans like W.E.B. Dubois demanded equal economic and educational opportunities for black men and women. Also protested the right to vote. -
The Jazz Age
After world war I, a lot of inventions in technology really changed the world. Some like the radio, washing machine, and refrigerators. The birth of jazz music which was created by African Americans which white people enjoyed. Model T one of Ford's first cars came out. Restaurants and motels were funded for people to go to and new hairstyles were found. -
Women and World war one
Millions of Americans served the war overseas in the war with Austria-Hungary. While men overseas fighting for their lives women were taking over jobs doing the "manlier" things to keep it going. Women worked as farmers, and mechanics, taking over as nurses or hospitals. Because men left, it left many jobs open for women and African Americans. Hello girls went to fight on the front lines. Women showed that they are equal. -
The Great Depression
laid off many workers and the stock market crash of 1929. Wiped out millions of spenders and investment dropped. 11,000 banks failed and the average family income dropped by 40%. The business failed, jobs failed, and no one could get a job nor pay for much. Most people lost their houses and most of what they owned. -
Brain trust
Roosevelt's advisors who helped form the ccc to help with forests, lands, and parks. Or the WPA, which helped put people to work. this committee helped come up with ideas to help out the community and their issues instead of just coming up with one idea from one mind, this gives a couple of different minds to help out. -
New deal
Helped improve lives during the great depression. some of these programs helped shaped these people's lives. One was the housing act of 1937. which improved living conditions for low-income families. Civil workers administration, created manual labor jobs for millions of unemployed workers who needed a job and money to provide for their families. -
Prohibiton
The nationwide ban of alcoholic beverages. led to organized crimes. Men after work who just wanted a beer. women who wanted to get drunk and have a good time. illegal production and sale of alcohol, an increase in smuggling, and a decline in tax revenue. it lasted 13 years until Roosevelt ended it. -
D day
land, air, and sea forces of the allied armies in what became known as the largest invasion force in human history Became a long and costly campaign to liberate north-west Europe from Nazi occupation. The odds of surviving were one in four. -
world war 2
after the bombing of pearl harbor by japan the U.S. declared war on Japan. hoping that the U.S. would want to remain peaceful. No, we started a war. 416,000 American soldiers died in world war 2. Because of our production of airplanes, and all our war powers and allies, and tanks and warships we won the war. -
The Holocaust
genocide of European Jews during world war 2, I don't understand why but Adolf Hitler wanted to mass murder a bunch of Jewish people because they were different. I am Jewish. more than 10 million victims of the holocaust one of what we all know as Anne frank. -
Jackie robinson
first African American baseball player to show that everyone is equal and can play sports at the highest level. He broke the color barrier in the MLB. Even through the harsh words and actions that went against him he became one of the best baseball players ever lived and everyone loves him. He is his own historical event. -
Brown vs board of education
After a long while. The board decided racial segregation of children in public schools was unconstitutional so they started to allow all African Americans in all schools. Ensuring equal justice, fairness, and education among everyone, Linda brown wasn't allowed in her school in Topeka, Kansas because of her skin so it was brought to the board. -
Levittown
I wanted to use this one because my dad grew up here. William Levitt was the creator of the modern suburb. every house was identical and everyone was buying them. people of modest incomes would travel around the country to come here to buy these houses. -
NAACP
National Association of the Advancement of Colored People, led a coalition of civil rights groups. The goals were to end segregation and gain civil rights. Some familiar cases that NAACP helped achieve were, Smith v. Allwright, which found states could not exclude African Americans from primaries. Also accomplishing the civil rights act of 1964, prohibited discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, and gender. -
Watergate
The break-in of headquarters in Washington D.C. in Watergate. Nixon administration's continual attempts to cover up its involvement in the June 17, 1972 break-in. Nixon kept recordings of what he said in his conversations and whatever he was saying he ended up resigning. -
Cold war
the emergence of nuclear weapons, and the fear of communism in the United States. between the Soviet Union and the United States. political beliefs, the Korean war, the impact of nuclear weapons, the Warsaw pact, and military rivalry all reasons the war started.
