  • First State Board of Eduaction

    First State Board of Eduaction
    The first State Board of Education was created by Massachusetts. The secretary of education was Horace Mann. He united unorganized community school systems in Massachusetts and other surrounding states. This is why he is now known as "The Father of American Education."
  • Crane School of Music

    Crane School of Music
    The Crane School of music was founded by Julia Etta Crane. It is the first institute in the United States to be dedicated to training music education teachers. It took music education seriously and helped shape many music educators and performers. Located in Potsdam, New York, there are currently 630 Undergraduates attending and 70 staff members.
  • Standardized Tests

    Standardized Tests
    As the number of students in the United States rose, and the number of teachers shrank during World War II, there needed to be a way to go through tests. Multiple choice is effective because there is only one right answer and they are easy to grade. Frederick J. Kelly invented the multiple-choice test. United States public schools are still using a similar form to these tests.

    Brown vs Board of Education
    The United States decided that "separate but equal" was actually unequal. Black students could now go to schools that were previously white-only. Even though there were struggles back then and still some discrimination now, schools treat all students equally and strive to be as equal as possible.
  • No Child Left Behind

    No Child Left Behind
    No Child Left Behind is meant to hold the states accountable for their districts and schools. Each student has to pass the tests in language arts, math, and science in third through eighth grade and once in high school. Schools that fail are punished. There are a variety of penalties given to failing schools ranging from students given tutors to restaffing the entire school district.
