    Massachusetts creates the first State Board of Education. Horace Mann (pictured) was the very first appointed secretary of education. Their job duties consisted of investigating conditions, reporting facts, exposing defects, and making reccomendations to the legislature concerning schools. This was the beginning to the eyes inside of all schools.
  • Carlisle Indian Boarding School Opens

    Carlisle Indian Boarding School Opens
    The quest to "kill the Indian, save the man" began with the ultimate goal to assimilate all Native Americans into American citizens. Native American children were removed from their homes and placed in these schools, stripped of their heritage and culture and forced to be taught the way of the white man.

    Brown v. Board of Education ruling
    U.S. Supreme Court rules that "seperate but equal" was "inherently unequal." Segregation in schools ends, and African American students are welcome to attend white schools. This ruling was met with much hatred and anger toward African Americans.

    Students with disabilities were granted rights and were eligible to receive education in public schools. These rights included specifically designed programs for disabled children.
