  • The American Civil War

    The American Civil War
    Who: Southern US vs Northern US
    What: War on the controversy of slavery.
    Where: USA
    When: 1861-1865
    Why: The Republicans (union) of the north wanted to ban slavery. The southern states (confederate) viewed this as a violation of their constitutional rights. The war began because each side had different beliefs on slavery. The northern states won the civil war. Over 620,000 men died in this war, more than any other war in American history.
  • The Great Depression

    The Great Depression
    Who: The USA and Canada
    What: The greatest economic downturn of industrial world.
    Where: Canada and the USA
    When: 1929-1939
    Why: It was caused by weakness in the economy and the crash of the stock market. On Black Tuesday, Canada lost over 14 billion dollars.
  • World War II

    World War II
    Who: Axis Powers (Germany, Italy, and Japan) and the Allies (France, Great Britain, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Soviet Union, US and India.
    What: A world war
    Where: There were many places, but it mostly happened in Europe, Pacific, Atlantic, Asia, China, and Japan.
    When: 1939-1945
    Why: The main reason is that Nazi Germany invaded Poland and war was declared on Germany by France and the United Kingdom. Other reasons are the Treaty of Versailles, Japanese Expansion, and Fascism.
  • The Cold War

    The Cold War
    Who: US and Russia.
    What: A war based on political, economic and military tension.
    Where: There is not a location. It was tension between two countries that never led to combat "Cold War."
    When: 1947-1991
    Why: A shifting of international power after WWII. The Soviet Union wanted to gain more territory and the United States wanted to limit what they gained. This led to conflict between the countries that was not directly engaged.
  • Civil Rights Movement

    Civil Rights Movement
    Who: Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks and Mohammed Ali
    What: A movement to end racial segregation against all African American people.
    Where: United States
    When: 1954 to 1968
    Why: To end all segregation towards coloured people and give equal rights the same as a white person would have. No more coloured washrooms, everyone sat together in restaurants and had the same access to schooling and transportation.

    Who: Martin Luther King an American Civil Rights Activist
    What: A speech during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
    When: August 28, 1963
    Where: Washington, DC on the steps of Lincoln Memorial.
    Why: To call for an end to racism and for civil and economic rights.
