Senate Bill X5 1 amends California Education Code Section 60605.8 to provide for adoption of the CCSS, including formation of an Academic Content Standards Commission (ACSC) responsible for making a recommendation to the SBE regarding adoption of CCSS. The CCSS can not be changed, but supplemental standards can be added (15 percent).

The 2010 Senate Bill X5 1 (Steinberg) called for California's academic content standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics to be examined against the Common Core Standards that were released in June 2010. The bill also called for the establishment of the California Academic Content Standards Commission. The Governor and Legislature made the required appointments to the commission and the Commission completed its work in July 2010, recommending ELA and Mathematics Common Core State Standar

The SBE adopts the Common Core State Standards, including California-specific standards, as recommended by the ACSC. SBE directs CDE staff to develop a plan and timeline for implementation of the standards.

SBE adopts modifications to the CCSS for Mathematics with California additions and model courses for higher mathematics, as authorized by Senate Bill 1200 (Chapter 654, Statutes of 2012).

SBE adopts College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards to the CCSS for English Language Arts and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects with California Additions, as authorized by SB 1200 (Chapter 654, Statutes of 2012).

2014 -2015 All U.S. are fully implementing Common Core Standards. Superintendents, and principals are offering professional development, workshops and staff development days to all adults who work in and out of the educational environment to ensure deeper understanding of CCSS.
