The National Association for the Deaf (NAD) was found in 1864. This is an association advocating for those who are deaf to receive equal rights (including a high quality education).

The case that concluded that racial segregation in school was unconstitutional and should no longer occur. This allowed families to start thinking about their is segregation of their kids with disabilities versus those who don't have disabilities in school.

Kennedy, President John F. Kennedys sister who was disabled, made an appearance to the public. Her appearance allowed the public to reconsider using the term "retardation". -
The Physically Disabled Students Program was now funded as part of a national initiative to help minority students. The independent living movement
was also implemented. This allowed people to reconsider the conditions those with disabilities should live in. -
Judith E. Heumann organized
the group, Disabled in Action (DIA), in 1970, who did demonstrations and took on
lawsuits to advocate for disability rights. One of the major components they were advocating for right to public transportation in NYC. -
The Pennsylvania Association for Retarded Children (PARC) won a classaction suit, going against the the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. They were claiming the right that all children can join the public school system. This allowed for students with disabilities to take on more of a general education.

The earliest form of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement act (IDEIA) was implemented as a Public Law
94–142 . This was called the Education for All Handicapped Children Act (EHA). This law requires educators to have the least restrictive environment (LRE) possible for those with disabilites. -
