    THe Revolutionary War began in 1775. By 1783, the United States had won the war against Great Britian and was becoming a new nation.

    Declaration of Independence
    In 1776 the colonies proclaimed freedom in the Declaration of Independence, written by Thomas Jefferson.

    Industrial Revolution

    Industrialization and Urbanization took place in the 19th and 20th centuries. Breakthroughs in the iron industry, textile factories, and the invention of the steam engine were some key developments.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    Louisiana Purchase
    President Thomas Jefferson bought Louisiana, a large territory between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountain, from France. The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the U.S. Jefferson sent Meriwether Louis and William Clark to explore the region. Their travels are known as the Louis and Clark Expedition.

    In response to the newly elected president Abraham Lincoln's winning of the election, 11 southern states ceceded from the Union. The Civil War began in 1861. The North, with its larger population and resources, eventuallly won the war in 1865. The North and South were reunited.

    Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution is ratified, prohibiting slavery.

    The 1st World War started in Europe in 1914, and most Americans wanted to stay out of the fighting. When Germany sank a number of ships, killing innocent U.S. civilians. The United States joined the war in 1917 and helped the Allies win it.

    In 1929, stock prices plunged and many Americans lost their money. The Great Depression, a period of severe economic decline, began. Businesses failed and millions were out of work. It lasted until the early 1940s.

    Th Dust Bowl was a large area in the Great Plains that suffered droughts and dust storms.
  • World War II

    World War II
    By the late 1930s, war was ragin once again in Europe and Aisa. Then in 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and the United States joined the war. The war ended in 1945.

    The U.S. competed with the Communist Soviet Union to be the strongest political and military power. When the soviet union fell apart in 1991, the U.S. became the richest and most powerful country in the world.
  • Apollo 11

    Apollo 11
    Apollo 11 was the first manned mission to land on the moon. The Apollo 11 spacecraft was launched from Cape Kennedy at 1:32PM on July 16, 1969. It's crew members were Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldin.

    Title IX gave girls the same education rights as boys. It broke down barriers in sports and gave girls confidence in their abilities.
  • 9/11

    9/11
    Terrorist airplanes into the World Trade Center in New York City and into the Pentagon in D.C. Approximately 3,000 people died.
