    William Symington - Steamboat
    The British engineer William Symington invented the steamboat in 1801. Back then its purpose was to tow barges form Forth & Cyde Canal in in Scotland.   • Warren De La Rue - Proto-Light Bulb

    Warren De La Rue - Proto-Light Bulb
    In 1820 Warren De La Rue got an empty tube and places a coil of platinum in it and allowed an electric current to pass through the contraption. This contraption was the first proto-light bulb.
  • William Hart - Natural Gas Well

    William Hart - Natural Gas Well
    In New York William Hart dug the first natural gas well. He dug 27 foot well. During this time period natural gas was used mainly as a source of light. William Hart is known as the “father of natural gas”.
  • Coal over Wood

    In 1830 when the Tom Thumb locomotive was built people became more interested in coal to fuel there trains in the United States. Eentually all American locomotives ran on coal instead of wood. This was the first step in the coal industry taking shape.
  • Daniel Halladay - Windmill Water Pumping

    Daniel Halladay, a mechanic from Conneticut, formed the Halladay Wind Mill Company off of his perfected windmill.It was first used my Western railroad builders who provided water to Union Pacific steam locomotives. In the following years they became very famous and showed up everywhere.
  • Auguste Mouchout - Solar Power

    Auguste Mouchout - Solar Power
    Auguste Mouchout directly converted solar radiation to mechanical power. The next year he got a patent for a motor running on solar power. He laid the foundation for converting solar radiation into mechanical steam power. He continued to improve on his design throughout his life.
  • Thomas Edison - Electric Plant

    In new York at 3 Am.M. Thomas Edison flicked the switched and turned on America's 1st power plant.It served many people and the nation's largest newspapers.
  • Vegetable Oil powered Diesel Engine

    Demonstrated at the 1900's World's Fair the Frnch government asked the otto company to design and build a diesel engine that ran on peanut oil. They did and dmeonstrated it at the fair.
  • John D. Grant - Geothermal Power Plant

    In California, John D. Grant ran a tiny direct-current generator and drilled a geothermal well that was used to provide electricy for The Geysers resort.
  • Hoover Dam Hydroelectric Power Plant

    On the Colorado River in Arizona the world's largest hydroelectric power plant stands. It eas completed in four years and is the largest producer of hydroelectricty in the world up until 1948.
