Historical Development of the Measurement of Pressure

  • Oct 16, 1564

    Galileo

    Galileo
He created a pump that brought water up from the underground it worked like a syringe. He was confused why the water would rise to a certain point but then not go any higher

    Gases in the Atmosphere

  • Evangelist Toricelli

    Evangelist Toricelli
He created a tube 4 feet tall and filled it with mecrury and then placed it upside down and he notcied that all of it did not run out. He was the first man to create a sustand vaccum. This tube was called a barometer.
  • Otto von Guericke

    Otto von Guericke
He did the same things as galileo but he figured out the reason behind it. It didnt rise any higher because he found that the atmosphric pressuere held the water from coming any higher.
  • Blasie Pascal

    Blasie Pascal
He travled up and down the mountains in france. And he discoverd that the pressure went up as he travled down the hill.
  • Christann Huygens

    Christann Huygens
He devolped the mamometer to study the elastic forces of the gas. This was a big break through for science.
  • John Dalton

    John Dalton
He stated that in a mixture of gases the pressure is equal and the pressure exerted by each gas is called partial pressure.
  • Joesph Louis Guy-Lussac

    Joesph Louis Guy-Lussac
He made a law that the mass of gas and its volume is constant. So if the volume goes up the mass has to go up.
  • Amedeo Avogadro

    Amedeo Avogadro
He expanded of Guy-Lussac say that the mass and its volume is the same as its molecuar weights and the molecular mass can be calculted by the know volume
