  • What is a Hero/Subway Hero

    What is a Hero/Subway Hero
When asked to define what a hero was, I knew that a hero is not just someone who can save a town from destruction, but that a hero is someone who sees danger and reacts immediately not because of the glory and fame, but because they feel the need to help. The subway hero exemplified this definition because he left his children at the station to save a man's life after falling into the gutter. His heroic actions inspire me to be selfless and courageous in situations like his.
  • Why Courage Matters-Roy Benavidez

The story about Roy Benavidez really made me think about the other things that a hero constitutes. Benavidez was not 'just doing his job.' He could have just given up and not have helped the other victims, but he chose to take the risk and save the others before he saved himself. I did not know people could still live with so many bullet wounds, but I admire his perseverance and his great selflessness.
  • Kristi Quillen Interview

While I was listening to the interview today, I was amazed that Ms. Quillen gave up her life here in Texas to go work as a Peace Corps Volunteer. It was weird to know that even after college, she still felt somewhat disconnected with her job and that she felt like something was missing. Her heroism strikes a chord with me because my grandfather has dedicated the latter part of his life to giving education to underprivileged children, just like Ms. Quillen.
  • Choosing My Hero at the Library

Choosing My Hero at the Library
I went through a series of heroes before actually deciding on one. After going throguh Nelson Mandela, Coco Chanel, and Jane Austen, I became fruestrated because these people did not 'hit home' with me, I asked my friends for advice, and one of them mentioned to choose someone that changed the career that I want to pursue, which is medicine. I chose Florence Nightingale, a nurse during the Crimean war, who made it suitable for a woman to be in medicine.
  • Library-Looking for Books

As I searched for books about Florence Nightingale, I noticed that most of the books that I found were compilations of innovators and heroes. I steered clear from these books because I knew that I would get very little information about Nightingale. I found one book that was completely about her, but the book was still too small to give me enough information. I did not have any luck finding a book about Nightingale at the school library.
  • Library-Finding a Book Day 2

Today, I looked on the Fort Bend Library website and found the perfect book about Florence Nightingale with an ample amount of information. I put a hold on the book, and I am lanning to pick it up on Tuesday.
  • Adding to My Definition of a Hero

During class, we seperated a list of heroes into distinct categories. Categories such as humanitarians, artists, and innovators all shared certain qualities.
Definition of a hero at this point: A selfless, courageous person who is influential to others and is willing to make sacrifices to help others.
  • "Change the World" Powerpoint, John Mayer, Year of the Rat

When I firtst saw Hugh Laurie's comedy act, of course I laughed. But then, after thinking for some time, I realised that what he is saying is that the people of today do not really know what to do to instill change. John Mayer is stating that he is just waiting on the world to change, which I disagreed with during the discussion because there is always something you can do to make a change instead of just sitting back.
  • Youth of Today Video

The Youth of Today video makes me want to do something, but going back to the Hugh Laurie parody, I do not really know what I would need to change or how. This video ties everything together by creating a basis for what our generation should do, and what is currently being done.
Definition of a Hero Now: someone who instills change in order to better the popuplation as a whole.
  • 1st Blog Post- How I Chose my Hero

After deciding on Florence Nightingale and finding a book, I reevaluated my decision, and wrote my thoughts on how my decision came to be in my blog post.
  • 2nd Blog Post

    2nd Blog Post
I began thinking and writing about Heroes in Literature and their comparison to heroes that I see in the news.
  • Sharing Biographies

    Sharing Biographies
The paragraph that I chose from my book to read to the class was the turning point of Nightingale's life in medicine and war. After getting that last word of assurance from Dr Howe, a doctor visiting the UK from America, Nightingale knew that she wanted to help the wounded instead of standing in the background like most women in the 1800's.
  • Mrs. Carter Interview

After school, I went to Mrs Carter's room, the Principles of Health Science teacher, to ask when she was available to do my interview. Mrs Carter was the one who intially introduced me to Florence Nightingale last year when I was taking her class.
  • Sharing Biographies Day 2

As I heard everyboy in our class present their biographies, I was surprised to see the amount of diversity between the heroes. Some are doing athletes while others are doing scientists. I was amazed by the different definitions of a hero and how it fits into each category.
