There was a horrible rain storm that came in on the 27th. It was knee deep and, they had to move all of their stuff out uo to the Alleghany Mountians. -
Place : Pocahontas Co. { west } Va.
Henry H. Dedrick writes to his wife that he is very healthy and that all is well. His friend "Bridge" has yellow Jaundice and most of the rest of the army has some terrible disease too. He has no more money to send to his wife so he tells the wife to sell one of the calves. There was also a battle at the rive near Strait creek, and they lost 4 men and 21 were wounded. -

His friend Bill recovers from his sickness, and the rest of the army is better except RIce and Bridge. Everyone there is having hard times becuase it is winter. It has been snowing there every two or three days. They moved to a cabin in the Alleghanies for the winter. He had to stand gaurd one week and he almost got a very bad cold, because it was so cold. They are at Pocahontas County Va. He tells his wife that he is okay, but he feels like he is starting to get a slight cold. HIs friend Bill. O won't eat any breakfast and is very sick with a disease nobody knows about.. He sends his wife a little more money. -

He writes to his wife that he has a case of the Measles. He has had them for a little more than a week. He said they didn't hurt much. Most of the army is taking turns working in the blacksmith shop. He ask's his wife to send him some pants because all of he does'nt have much anymore. He tells his wife he is trying to get into religion things like she wanted but he says it's hard because of the camp he is at. -

He tells his wife that everyone their is sick, except him. He tells her that he got the pants that she sent him along with hickory nuts, whiskey and some apples. He told her that they are getting alot more busier so he is having little time to write to her. He said it is very warm at where he is at. He tells her that at Camp Alleghany there is a lake and sometimes him and his friends go for a very short swim. He telss his wife that there wa a small battle near camp alleghany but he was near it, -

He tells his wife thst he is helping people make clapboards for some stables. He tells her that he is still well, but his friend Franklin Manly died he was very sad about it. He tells his wife that Franklin was one of his very good friends, and that nobody knows the cause of his death. He sends his wife some money and tells her to buy whatever it is she wants. He has'nt been on gaurd or picket for a whole month and is very happy about that because he does'nt enjoy it. -
Place : Camp Alleghany
His dad sends him a letter telling him his mom is very ill, and is not doing well. He also sends henry a poem that henry's son wrote for him. Hernry tells his his wife that he is well at the time, He also tells her that the soilders that they have for the pickets are'nt very good at the job. He says that they make flase alarms and so the whole army has to go in ditches and get ready to fight and almost freeze, he also tells his wife that things are very expenisve and he had to pay 2.00 for pants -
Random letter concerning wife and traveling in the army
His wife tells him that she has the mumps and it makes Henry sad and he gives her some tips to get well. He tells his wife that they left Alleghany and are going to Monterey. They are 24 1/2 miles of Staunton and 14/12 miles from Buffalo Gap. His wife sent him some of her hair, he kept it special because he thought he wasnt going to see his wife again. -

He tells his wfie everyone is well but the leader of the army is haing some emotional issues because his wife died, So the army has been trying to help him cheer up He tells his wife that he does'nt know what he would do if he lost his wife. He wants his wife and friends to come visit him very soon. He tells his wife that there was a battle at port rebulic Port Rebulic, he fought in it and didnt get wounded. -
Place : Camp near James river
He writes to his father and tells him that his father's good friend William got in a fight with one of our creek boys and got beat up pretty bad, he asks his father to send him some food because he says that now there not getting even half the food that they use to. He also tells his father that he has a blanket he wants to send his father. He also tells his wife to send him a good pair of boots. -

He tells his wife that him and two of the sergant were stadning gaurd of a bridge that led to the camp they were at. He ask's her to send him some tobacco. He tells his wife that he has been getting some from Castle Thunder, which is a former tobacco plantaion in RIchmond. -
Place : Camp near culhorse courthouse
He tells his wife that they have been marrching from camp to camp and that he has alot of blisters on his feet because his boots are too small. He tells his wife that he has bought some new clothes but needs alot more because the ones he has, are starting to tear. He says he would have bought more clothes but he does'nt have alot of money at the time.. -

He tells his wife that his friend died in Gettysburg. He was expecially sad about it because he was standing behind his friend when he got shot and died. Henry said he did everything to help him survive but it was too late.
